Welcome to Coronado School of the Arts -May 2021
Greetings CoSA Families!
How did we get to May already?! In such a unique and challenging year, we here at CoSA have been able to do and share so much, and there is still so much more yet to come. Thank you to everyone who supported our Dance production this past weekend. The MTD production of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change! Is available to stream online for the next week.
Thank you everyone for your support of the CoSA program during these trying times and for continuing to entrust us with the artistic growth of your children. We couldn't be CoSA without all of you.

CONSERVATORY UPDATES
Classical & Contemporary Dance
CoSA Dance kicked off the Spring digital dance concert this past weekend! The concert features original dance films created by faculty and student choreographers, and solos that spotlight graduating seniors. We had great fun in the CHS Quad Friday night, May 14th, for our socially distant outdoor screening. It was great to see so many families in attendance supporting our students. See some photos of the event and some from filming below.

Digital Arts (Animation, Filmmaking, Game Design and Graphic Design)
Digital Media Foundations are creating their own animations: choice of a flip book, stop motion or frame animation. Graphic Design 1 and 2 are creating an advertisement in three different eras, Graphic Design 3 students are making custom playing cards by curating custom DigArts student artwork for each card, Graphic Design 4 are working on the senior project.
All Film students just finished their documentaries. Film 2 are now making instructional How-To videos, Film 3 are making short films emulating a country's thematic style in their World Cinema Unit, and Film 4 are working on their senior project films.
Design in New Media 1 are working on a Color Scheme/Emotion Project, Design in New Media 3 are working on an Art Movement Emulation Project.
All DigArts students will be preparing for their 2nd Semester Juries soon. Students are creating powerful and beautiful work despite the logistical and technical challenges of this year! I am so proud of them.

Digital Arts Instructor, Graphic Design and Film.
Instrumental Music
The CoSA woodwind ensemble is doing quite well. We were able to meet in person a few times before we had to stop again. We very much look forward to next year when we will truly play together as an ensemble and will hopefully add new personnel. Alex Leyva is becoming an outstanding soprano saxophone player, and is working on many difficult blues, jazz and pop tunes. Julian Myers is working on Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet, as well as many pop tunes and improvisations of his own.
CoSA Brass Ensemble is working on the last movement of a 4 movement flute duet by Telemann. Francisco “Kiko” Hanna Mathis is excited to be headed off to SDSU where he will study trumpet with John Wilds of the San Diego symphony.
The Jazz Ensemble is building their repertoire of diverse jazz standards. They are using their in person rehearsal time to arrange songs, transcribe solos from famous artists, and simply enjoy performing with one another.

Theatre Production, Design and Management
The tech theatre students are currently wrapping up a unit on sound. Students have learned about the functions of all of the sound equipment here at the CHS theatre. CoSA students presented diagrams regarding audio signal flow representing the inputs and outputs of various sound equipment. Stagecraft students learned how to set up a basic PA system with speakers, an audio mixer, microphone, and AUX cord. This week, they researched how to become a sound engineer. This included qualifications, education, median pay, and job descriptions. Following that assignment, they were asked to listen for 10 minutes and denote the sounds they heard while at an indoor location and outdoor location of their choice. They made notes regarding the order in which they heard the sounds and what surprised them along the way.

Visual Art
Four brave CoSA students worked with Silver Strand Elementary Principal, Jenny Moore to design a new public art piece for the Silver Strand School and, the local Military Community! During distance learning students drafted multiple designs to fit the 30 foot wall. The design themes were intended to inspire students, and celebrate the core values that Silver Strand models for all. Thank You Silver Strand Crew for cultivating Respect, Responsibility, Safety and Kindness in the community, and supporting the Arts!
The truth is written on the wall! The students and Mrs. Moore settled on the design by CoSA Junior, Serena Aguon for the final public work. CoSA Junior and IB Muralist, Isabella Anderson teamed up with her dad, Justin Anderson to project the contours of the design at the mural site after dark. In the true spirit of Respect, Responsibility, Safety and Kindness, Serena and Bella worked with fellow CoSA Juniors, Austin Lim and Xavier Cortes tirelessly to co-create this vibrant, colorful and authentically inspiring mural on the playground for all Silver Strand kids to enjoy! The mural is a landmark that can now be seen driving down the Strand as well as from the street of Lincoln Housing. We celebrate our Military students, parents and supportive Silver Strand Staff with the visionary teamwork of our dedicated CoSA Student Artists!
