Celebrating Success!
WFES Honored
Woodland Forrest Elementary School was honored on a national stage today as a 2018 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School. WFES was nominated by Alabama State Department of Education and demonstrates a commitment to its role in helping create a sustainable world through the pursuit of strategies that improve environmental conditions, enhance individual well-being, and develop well-educated, thoughtful and engaged graduates.
As a Discovering Alabama Model School, Woodland Forrest ensures that all students are learning that science is exciting and the environment is worth saving. Great emphasis is placed on science and environmental learning through the school’s science lab, its Alabama Certified Outdoor Classrooms, man-made sensory garden, butterfly garden, bird sanctuary, recirculating water-flow waterfalls, and student participation in several beneficial recycling programs.
“We are extremely proud of the distinction of being recognized as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, said Dr. Terri North Byrts, the school's former principal and current TCS director of student literacy. "We feel like our students benefit from the environmental educational practices that are embedded in our daily routines. The benefits that our students receive from these practices will be far-reaching and greatly impact their lives.”
National Merit Recognition for Northridge Students
Four Northridge High School students will advance to the next round of a prestigious national scholarship program. Isaac Smith, Ethan Sneckenberger, Nathan Shemwell, and Walker Ferry were recently named National Merit Semifinalists. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.
Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were named by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Big Checks. Big Smiles.
Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Elementary and Verner Elementary School were presented $20,000 checks this week for third grade reading gains. The schools were two of 50 recognized through a $1 million awards program authorized by the state legislature.
Alabama House District 63 Representative Bill Poole, who represents Tuscaloosa, noted the importance of reading.
“Reading is fundamental to learning at all grade levels and it is critical that we improve third grade reading scores in every school in Alabama. There is nothing more important in education in Alabama than ensuring that our third graders are reading and writing at grade level," said Poole, Ways and Means Education Chair. "These schools that have demonstrated significant gains in reading achievement are to be applauded and congratulated for their successes in these areas."
