Martin's Memos
Volume 1, Issue 6: October13, 2017
This Week
What a fantastic week! The students are impressing me with their work ethic and perseverance. We are learning that it is OK to be challenged and give our brains a "work out" during school. We have also been focusing on teamwork and collaboration to help us grow.
Please take a look at this week's newsletter and let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks!
-Ms. Kate Martin

Topics:
Writing: Publishing our personal narrative stories, continuing with cursive.
Reading: Lucy Calkins reading program unit on "Interpreting Characters". Please encourage your child to work for at least 30 minutes total per week on www.learnzillion.com on the lessons they are assigned from Google Classroom. We usually have time for students to work on this during reader's workshop for about 15 minutes.
Math: We now have THREE differentiated math groups in class and have started on our second unit. Please encourage your child to work for at least 30 minutes total per week on www.khanacademy.org/maptest. We usually have time for students to work on this during math workshop for about 15 minutes.
Science: We summarized what we learned in our Plant & Animal Structures and Information Processing Unit.
Enrichment: We continued to design our online educational portfolios using Weebly.

Volunteering
Please view this volunteer spreadsheet if you'd like to see if there is a time you can volunteer. It doesn't need to be every week, but I'm hoping it can be something consistent each month.
Important Things to Remember About Volunteering
1. Always be on time. The class has a tight schedule and a lot to accomplish in a day.
2. If you cannot make your scheduled time please call/email me as soon as possible.
3. Please do not bring younger siblings into the classroom while you are volunteering.
Thank you for your help!
Character Trait of the Week: Teamwork
