Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Community,
We cannot wait to entertain you on Tuesday, December 7th and Thursday, December 9th at our Holiday Tax Credit Concerts. Our young musicians have a fabulous performance planned for you! You will find a flow map (attached below) as we have several events planned for the evening. You will enter through the primary gates into the Primary Outdoor Environment to enjoy a sampling of our art displayed in the garden. From the Outdoor Environment, you will go left to the concert seating area at the east end of the campus. Please remember to bring a blanket or your own folding chairs. After the concert, you may visit our book fair in the media center and then tour our Elementary/Middle School Harvest Garden to enjoy its lush beauty and a little salad where Mr. Moench will be your garden host.
PLEASE plan to stay for the entire concert. When transitions occur during the concert, it disrupts the concert for the entire audience. Your children will be held in the classroom prior to their performance and will return to their classrooms after. They will wait for you there, to be picked up at the CONCLUSION of the concert.
We will be recording the concert so that the children and teachers can view and enjoy the entire show together.
Holiday Concert Map
Our flag football team is concluding their season this Saturday. They have had a fine season winning four games and losing just one. Saturday they will play the last games from which the emerging winner will play in the championship game on Saturday.
The Shaw volleyball team is currently undefeated having won all five games! They are a spirited, determined group. Their championship game will be held next week. We are looking forward to housing the championship trophies in our school office for another year! We wish our volleyball and football STARS, Coach Allison and Coach Wilfert, the best of luck in their upcoming competitions.
Our Lego Robotics Team and Coach Chan will also be competing on Saturday at Metro Tech in the State Qualifiers. This team, The Tomfoolery’s, have been working since August on all of the projects involved in this competition and it is intense. Doing the runs with the Lego robot is just a small component of this impressive STEM program. Should they place on Saturday, they will move on to the state championship to be held later this winter.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Ways to Practice Gratitude
Hello Shaw Community!
I have spoken about what gratitude is and the benefits of gratitude in a previous issue of See Shaw Shine. This week I would like to share with you some ways to practice gratitude.
- Gratitude Journal - write down 3 things you are grateful for each day
- Gratitude Rock – choose a rock you like (pretty, nice texture from someplace special). You can carry it in your pocket or place it somewhere you will see it often. Every time you touch the rock think of 1 thing you are grateful for.
- Gratitude Walk – the goal of the work is to observe things using all of your senses. For example, feel the sun on your skin, feel your feet hitting the ground, hear the birds, etc.
- Gratitude Collage – Take a picture of something you are grateful for each day
- Write a gratitude message to someone letting them know why you appreciate them
- Express Gratitude in Person – hug someone, be an active listener, give compliments, smile
- Random Acts of Kindness
These are just a few examples of how to include gratitude in your life. Find what works for you and start your gratitude journey.

Garden Update
Greetings!
We started a new block this week. Our subject for December/January is COMPOSTING! We learned about the various ingredients for composting (Green and brown materials) and what not to compost. Each class built a layer of green and brown materials. The new compost pile is already heating up!
We have also been seeding cotton, zinnia flowers and wheat. We pulled some wheat out of the shed and found a family of mice living at the bottom of the wheat pile! The mother never returned so we took the little babies to Liberty Wildlife Shelter (thanks Shireen!). We assume they are doing well.
The garden looks robust! Big thanks to our Shaw students for helping cultivate such a beautiful garden. Next week we will continue our harvest. The produce that we harvest will be used for our holiday concert event. We will be serving salad in the garden. There will be a fire and cheer. Come say hi before the performance on Tuesday AND Thursday. Mark your calendars!
Our tree planting has been placed on hold until after Christmas break. Please be wary of the holes on campus. We don’t want any accidents.
We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
