CHS Viking News
March 2024
Dear Viking Family,
What an impressive stretch it has been for our Vikings! Congratulations to the Girls Basketball team on their second state title in as many years. And how about Coach Adams and the Viking Basketball Team on winning both the IEL and Regional Titles, sending the Vikings to the state championships for the first time in more than a decade! Cheer and Wrestling have also made us proud by advancing to their respective state championships. For those keeping score, our Vikings have garnered ten regional titles this year as well as eight state trophies -- and still counting!
While we take great pride in all the success of our athletics and activities, our focus remains on academics and citizenship, ensuring that Coeur d’Alene High School is producing well-rounded individuals, well-equipped to take on whatever challenges life presents. To this end, CHS has been innovative in implementing two programs characteristic of high-performing schools. First, we have officially implemented intervention time, henceforth called “Overtime,” where every few weeks our Vikings receive targeted remediation, additional rigor, or are afforded the opportunity to take an exploratory class. Our first session proved successful, but we will continue to refine this process. Second, we have also implemented our Academic Coaching program, led by Viking teacher Jeff Lake. Here, nine teacher-advocates have been assigned a small handful of students with whom they complete weekly check-ins, reviewing students' grades and communicating with teachers and parents as needed.
In addition to these programs targeting academics, CHS works to foster citizenship by recognizing students making (drumroll, please) Good Choices! Our teachers use our Viking Card program to send cards home to parents, acknowledging the good choices being made by their child. More recently, we have started our Viking of the Month program, where teachers nominate and vote on students at each grade level. These students will be recognized at our new Viking Way Assembly, scheduled for May!
We are fortunate to provide our Vikings with so many opportunities to succeed, made possible by an incredibly supportive Viking Community. We value that partnership!
Once a Viking, Always a Viking!

English 258 Dual Credit Class Field Trip
On February 7th, senior students from Mrs. Fields' English 258 Dual Credit class took a field trip to Sorensen Elementary to teach 3rd-grade students about narrative writing. Elementary and high school students spent the afternoon reading, writing, and learning about the power of the narrative. 3rd-grade students had a wonderful time guiding their high school peers through a tour of their classrooms and recent projects. This EXCEL-funded field trip also provided Matilda books for all 3rd-graders.

Growing the STEM: Influencing Math Attitude AND Aptitude
Growing the STEM, is the behind-the-scenes nonprofit founded in 2017. We organize and
support math and science programs for students in Coeur d’Alene public schools, with an
emphasis on developing youth leaders and encouraging underrepresented groups to pursue
STEM education and activities. We currently run six programs: Math is Cool; Mathletes
Mentoring; STEM Club; Engineering Club; STEAM Club (art); and Chess Club. Volunteering
with GTS can help you earn those required NHS, Key Club, and Senior Project hours, and shows
those prospective colleges your commitment to leadership, academics, and serving the
community! Coaches are also eligible for scholarships through GTS.
