Message from Lisa Wells-Parent Instructional and Title I Program Coordinator
As part of my role as the Parent Instructional Coordinator and the Title 1 Program, ongoing staff training will be provided in parent/family engagement and effective parent/family communication.
It is key to build relationships with our families and to work with our students for academic success. I will be working, in tandem with Sharon Chen who is the Parent Instructional Coordinator at Graves Elementary School.
As was shared during our Title 1 Building Staff Capacity meeting, " every teacher is a family engagement specialist" which truly includes all staff members in the school building. We want to have our families be engaged with the school and the education of their children.
This month I am attaching "The Five C's". The topics are: Clarify Goals and Expectations, Communicate with Your Child, Change the Conversation, Collaborate with Your Child's School, and Celebrate Your Child.
Traditionally when we see families attending meetings, workshops, and school events then the families are engaged. As you read the "The Five C's", you will learn that families are and can be engaged in other ways.
"The Five C's" is written by Dr. Steve Constantino. Dr. Constantino is a leader, teacher, motivational speaker, and best-selling author. He is internationally recognized for his work in family engagement and his innovative, non- conventional, entrepreneurial and outlier approaches to leading organizations and acquiring impressive results.
Parent Instructional Coordinators with Parent Liaisons across the county and the District Title 1 Federal Program have had the honor of participating in a series of Professional Learning sessions with him.
I hope that "The Five C's" provides some insight on how our Graves families are engaged.
As ALWAYS, thank you for ALL that you DO!

Digital Citizenship Week-October 18-22
Digital Citizenship Week is October 18-22 and the media center will be focusing on the topic of media literacy!
Here are some ways you can celebrate Digital Citizenship Week with your family and students:
Take the How News Literate Are You? Quiz from the News Literacy Project
Check out this CrashCourse video on Lateral Reading (a great tool for determining the credibility of a person, organization, or claim!)
Watch this deepfake of Bill Hader Channeling Tom Cruise, then read this 60 Minutes story on the Impact of Deep Fakes and how to authenticate real videos.
Explore these Media Literacy Resources through Edutopia (special thanks to Dr. Glenn for sharing this resource!)
Additionally, Digital Citizenship Week is a great opportunity to take stock of your media use and how it may or may not be affecting your well-being. Here are some reasons why you might want to take part in a “digital detox” and tips on how to do it effectively.
Have questions about media literacy, media balance, or other topics related to digital citizenship? Feel free to stop by the media center or email Laura Sly!
