Speech and Debate
Hood River Valley High School Junior, Sam Bertrand won 4th Place in Radio Commentary at the Silverton High School Fox Invitational Speech and Debate tournament on November 5th. Seventeen students from Hood River Valley High School participated in the tournament. The students, approximately half of the team, included nine who were competing for the first time. 34 schools attended the tournament, making it an exceptionally competitive start to the season.
OSAC Scholarship
Over 400 scholarships, offered through the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, are now available at www.oregonstudentaid.gov. Students can apply for up to 20 scholarships. Early Bird deadline is February 15th. The regular deadline is March 1st. SUMMIT will be offering a workshop on Wed, December 14th, at 1:30pm in the HRVHS computer lab to work with students on how to fill out this application. Students need to sign up in SUMMIT to assure a seat in any one of these workshops. If you have questions please call Lisa Roberts in the Summit Career Center.
Other Scholarships
We have copies of many of the scholarships that are on our website in the SUMMIT Career Center. Most of the scholarships are still current and have a website that you may obtain the application. If you want more information about scholarships, grants, financial aid, or other types of funding for college, call Lisa at 541-387-5034 x3.
FAFSA Completion
If you need help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid - FAFSA, please contact Lisa Roberts at Lisa.roberts@hoodriver.k12.or.us or 541-387-5034 x3. The application opened on Oct 1 and all seniors wanting to go to college should complete the application by January 2017 to be eligible for scholarships and financial aid.

Yearbook
FlashBack photos needed! The yearbook staff needs flashback photos from parents this year. THESE ARE NOT BABY PHOTOS. Flashback photos are of seniors, grades K-8, preferably in groups. College - Trades - Military Fair
In the Commons on Wednesday, February 8, 2017
· All students will be attending the fair in shifts from 1:35 - 3:30 p.m.; there will be a variety of college/trade/military representatives to share information with students. Representatives will be in the commons until 3:30 for students (and parents if they want to come after school) wanting to gain more information after school.
The purpose of the fair is to:
· Learn what education levels are needed for certain careers.
· Learn college information provided about programs, the application process etc.
· Learn about the 'Trades' industry including apprenticeship programs.
· Learn information from the different military branches about enlisting, requirements, education opportunities and career options.

Judges for EA Presentations
HOOD RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL EXTENDED APPLICATION (EA) PRESENTATION VOLUNTEER JUDGES NEEDED…
Volunteers are needed to judge our 1st semester (EA) Presentations on Monday, January 23rd from 6:20 to 8:45. Packets and refreshments will be handed out in the foyer beginning at 5:45 on the 23rd. A brief informational meeting will start at 6:00; questions will be answered during that time for those that have not volunteered before and/or reviewed the information at our website and still want further guidance. Information to help you understand what is involved in preparing an EA, and what we ask of our volunteers when judging is located at our website www.hrvhs.com. In the menu bar click on “Academics” and then click on “Extended Application” there you will have access to all the information needed. Volunteers will be assigned in groups of two or three to a room and students will be presenting their projects in 10 minute time slots, with judges having another 10 minutes to score.
