From the Principal's Desk
Happy Friday of the First Week of School-
Thank you families this week for partnering with us as we kicked off our new school year! We were excited to see the great turn out at Open House on the 13th! Several students and families decided to take part in the GBE Scavenger Hunt to learn more about our teachers and staff. If you did not get to see the fun facts about our staff look for it in upcoming newsletters I send out and one of our main bulletin boards.
We also were able to have OPAA Foods here with a sampling of our fruits and veggie bar the kids are able to choose from each day at lunch. I think the snacks were a great hit this year! Thank you OPAA Foods!
Our next event is next Friday, August 24th. We will have a Back to School Picnic at GBE starting at 4:30 with our Welcome and MMS Cheerleaders Cheering us into a fabulous new school year. After the Welcome families can come to the playground (side closest to the softball fields) for food, fun and fellowship! We will have tables and chairs set up, but feel free to bring your own chairs if you choose. This is a come and go event.
Lastly, you may have noticed that students who particpated in the Scavenger Hunt had button pins they placed on their Spartan Lanyards we use here at school for our Student ID's. Fourth and Fifth have ID's and Third Grades will be here after school pics are taken. The kids use these for breakfast/lunch and at the Library for checkout. Each event they attend this school year outside the school day, they will receive a button pin. We will have these at the Picnic to pass out to students who attend.
Thank you again for a great first week. We appreciate the open communication with families and want you to feel free to call or stop in if you have a question or concern.

Fall Benchmark Testing For Reading And Math Info for Parents:
This Fall we will start in September assessing our students in 3rd Grade with the Developmental Reading Assessment to determine their fluency/accuracy with sounds and words. Then we will also assess their comprehension and understanding of what they have read with this test. It is done as well at the Primary buildings and one they are familiar with as a student. Our students served by our Title Reading Teachers at all three grades will also use this test throughout the year to determine their reading level.
Starting this year, your student will also be taking a reading and math assessment called iReady. We'll be using this assessment to monitor their academic growth in both areas of learning.
During our Fall Parent-Teacher conferences, we'll provide more information to parents. This will include your student's scores from the first part of the quarter. We'll share additional academic growth as yoru student progreses through the year. This interactive monitoring tool will help us give your student more individualized learning.
