The Delevan Digest
February 2024
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Delevan Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well and ready for an amazing March!
It has officially been one month since I was named principal here at Delevan. During this time I have had the pleasure to observe many of your children's classes and I am really impressed with the quality of instruction that teachers and staff are providing to your children. I have had the opportunity to watch math, reading, interventions, specials, and so much more. Students are consistently engaged in the learning process and eager to participate in the lesson and centers.
This past month your children celebrated 100 day and valentines day. Coming up in March we have our reading challenge and have some exciting activities planned for our students to participate in. It is also agriculture month and some of our students will be visited by members of the high school FFA (Future Farmers of America) who will educate our classes on agriculture.
Wishing you and your families the best!
Mr. Jansma

We are WILD about READING
We are ready for another reading challenge to keep us motivated during these long winter months. This year our reading challenge theme is, WILD ABOUT READING! Reading challenges are a great way to read more books, read different books, and connect with new ideas and experiences.
Throughout the month students will be reading to meet classroom goals, as well as participating in a school-wide reading challenge. We will be kicking off this challenge on Wednesday, February 28th. To track the grade level progress, we will have a hallway display with grade level “Jungle Animals and trees”! As the students continue to read, each grade’s animal will climb to the top of the tree! If each grade reaches their specific goal (tree top) by the end of the challenge, they will be reward with a visit from The Buffalo Zoo Mobile! During this reading challenge, we will also be hosting a school-wide Read-A-Thon fundraiser. There are prizes for all students who participate.

Free/Reduced Lunch
Pioneer Central School District is participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program this school year. CEP is a federal program that allows eligible schools to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students. Every Pioneer student receives one free breakfast and one free lunch every school day. Nothing about the meals themselves has changed, and they all still meet the same nutritional standards they always have.
We will continue to collect the Education Benefits Form (formally meal application form) from families because this data is used to qualify the district for many forms of funding our schools. These funds help the district provide specialized services and school supplies directly to students that support ALL children in our schools. Forms can be filled out online at the link below or paper copy (available at the greeters desk). Information for families is included in the return to learn student folders.
