A Message from Principal Sarlos
We continue to be grateful for your support and trust in us as we work with your students.
All the teachers and counselors here at Palisades are working on teaching our students to think about what they are grateful for every day.
In that vein, I am so grateful to have the opportunity to serve as the Principal of this great language school. It was a pleasure to speak with so many of you last week at the Day of the Dead celebration about our complex cultural and linguistic heritage. It was also a pleasure to present to our school board last week regarding the planning we are doing for the Mandarin Chinese Strand which will start up next year.
Please make sure you read about the complicated new reunification drill we will be doing next Friday with 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade. Parents of the students of those grades will come to pick up students at the Rolling Hills Church in the Sanctuary.
I am feeling grateful that we are now in our fall season when we both get rain for all our plants and some beautiful sun like today. I wish you all a beautiful weekend.

Counselor Corner
Dear Palisades Families,
This month, we will be investing our time and attention on the character trait: GRATITUDE in our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, classrooms, and throughout our school community. Gratitude has been shown to be one of the best ways to reduce anxiety, increase happiness, & improve relationships. The practice of gratitude is a tool that both grounds us and also inspires hope, peace, and joy. For when we are grateful, we are stronger to “be the good” to our world.
One way to think about Gratitude is “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” Practicing Gratitude can increase our well-being and our happiness. Gratitude is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Throughout the school, we will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress management. We are choosing Gratitude!
The definition students will be learning at school this month is Gratitude:
choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.
Through our monthly Counseling Lesson, students will learn about having Gratitude for our emotions and for Coping Skills. We can bravely use those coping strategies when feelings overwhelm us.
Our monthly letters include activities to explore GRATITUDE further as a family.
Enjoy connecting together with the PurposeFull Pursuits inside the PreK - Grade 5 Gratitude Family Letters!
Thank you for teaming with us to empower our students socially and emotionally. Please reach out if you or your student would like more support. You can also fill out this form to Request for Family Resources.
Together,
Wendy Olsen

Dear Parents/Guardians:
We will be conducting a Lockdown Drill on November 18, 2022. State law requires we conduct 2 Lockdown drills each year. Our goal in planning for this important safety drill is to minimize the disruption to classroom learning and avoid creating undue concern, while simultaneously providing practice for staff, students, visitors, and volunteers. In the event of an emergency the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our most important priority.
A Lockdown is initiated when there is a threat inside the building. A lockdown secures students, staff, and volunteers within classrooms while leaving entrances open for emergency personnel and law enforcement to clear the building.
We will be conducting this drill with the assistance of the LOPD, who have become invaluable partners with the school district in all of our emergency training. Afterwards we will spend time assessing how well we executed procedures and where we can improve our practices. If you are interested in learning more about our lockdown procedures, visit the Safety and Security department page located the LOSD https://www.losdschools.org/domain/1748
In addition to the Lockdown Drill, our third, fourth and fifth graders will be practicing a Reunification Drill. This drill would be used in the case of an emergency where the building was no longer safe to occupy (e.g. earthquake/fire). In this drill district buses are dispatched to the school and students are loaded on the buses and, in this case, taken to Rolling Hills Church where they will be ushered into the sanctuary where they will wait with their teachers. Parents will be notified via the district’s emergency notification system using contact information in our student database system (Synergy - ParentVUE). Once notified parents make their way to Rolling Hills Church where they will fill out a pick-up card and reunited with their student. We expect parents to receive this message at approximately 12:30 pm for this drill.
What parents of third, fourth and fifth graders need to do:
Verify your contact information is correct in ParentVUE.
Update your child’s emergency contacts adding people who might pick them up in this type of situation.
Be on alert on the day of the drill and go to Rolling Hills Church to pick up your child when notified.
If you are unable to pick up at this earlier time, please arrange for one of your emergency contacts to pick up your child.
Notify Leticia Padilla via email if you do not want your child to participate in the Reunification Drill: padillal@loswego.k12.o.us
The safety of our children is our most important priority and we care deeply that each child feels safe at school.
The church is located 3.5 miles from Palisades World Language School, off Borland Road.
