Fraction Speed Bumps
5th Grade Math
Math Quest involves solving multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a better understanding for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. The six strategies, guess and check, work backwards, table or chart, act it out, draw a picture, and look for a pattern give students a foundation to better approach challenging and difficult math problems.
Fractions:
Through exploration and competition, students will deepen their understanding of fraction relationships. While students use their problem solving skills, they will be exposed to history, trivia, and fun facts.
5th Grade Reading
Human Rights:
Students have been busy learning about human rights and the global concerns in which they encompass. Some questions students have been pondering include;
Are all people created equal?
Are men smarter than women?
What role do environmental factors play in shaping the lives of others?
Why do some people have an abundance of food while others are dying of starvation?
Students created PowerPoint slides to depict a specific human right issue. They incorporated appropriate charts to represent data, real-world pictures, and interesting facts.
Please take a moment to view the powerpoints the students worked so diligently on.

A visual representation of what the world would look like if it were condensed to just 100 people. After discussing the book, watching the video and a popcorn activity, the students had a better understanding of global concerns where we live and around the world.

Math Road Trip
4th Grade Math
Math Quest:
Students have been working hard applying the six math problem solving strategies through intense word problems and multi-step operations. We will soon move into our next unit on rates, ratios, and proportions.
Rates, Ratios, & Proportions:
Students work in teams to review equivalent fractions and to use this knowledge to solve problems including understanding ratios, creating proportions, determining unit rates and understanding problems involving time, rate, and distance. Students will not only calculate their answers but they will be required to explain their thinking and validate the solution.
4th Grade Reading
Explaining the Unexplainable:
student's have been working hard reading a variety of text and analyzing different genres. We have focused on literary elements such as compare/contrast, main idea/details, drawing inferences and conclusions, and citing the text.
The Hero Within:
Students will be moving into their new unit, The Hero Within. Through reading, writing, listening, and speaking students will be able to comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, in the grades 4-5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding at the high end of the range (RL 4.10). Also, students will be able to engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own theory (SL 4.1).
Some of the items students will be discussing and analyzing are the hero within/superheroes and The Last Leaf (by O'Henrey).
Listening Centers
As scholary advisors to Greek Mythology the students created listening centers for the Natural Science Center in Greensboro. Their listening center is based on a myth of their choice. They will describe the myth and explain the scientific and or the historical relation.

Plus Magazine-
Plus Magazine is a free online publication dedicated to introducing readers to practical applications of mathematics. Plus Magazine strives to reach that goal through the publication of mathematics-related news articles, podcasts, and mathematics puzzles designed around "real-life" scenarios.
Math Live-
Math Live - is a neat mathematics website developed by Learn Alberta. Math Live presents students with animated stories that teach mathematics lessons. In all there are twenty-three lessons for elementary school and middle school students. The lessons are divided into four categories; Number, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, Statistics and Probability. Each animated lesson is accompanied by a mathematics worksheet that students complete either while watching the lesson or after viewing the lesson. Each lesson is divided into sections and students can advance or rewind as needed.
