Approval of the Amended Budget
Due to the timing of when the District receives its revenue and pays its expenses, the Board amended the 2021-2022 budget to reflect financial changes. Later in the meeting, the Board unanimously approved the amended budget.
Return to School Plan
Dr. Scott Warren, Superintendent of D103 Schools, outlined the District’s Return to School Plan aligned to the Illinois Department of Health’s guidelines regarding COVID mitigation.
The District will offer staff and students weekly take-home COVID testing.
Rapid 15-minute COVID tests will be available onsite.
School work will go home with students who test positive for COVID. Virtual classrooms will not be offered.
Students and staff who test positive for COVID must remain at home for five full days or longer if COVID symptoms continue.
Classroom seating will be arranged without spacing restrictions.
Students will return to eating lunch in the cafeteria without spacing restrictions.
COVID vaccines are encouraged.
Thorough school cleanings and sanitation will continue. The schools already have updated air ventilation systems in place at all schools.
Masks are optional.
Close contact tracing is not required.
Families will be notified when a COVID case has been identified in a classroom or bus.
School Security
As students return to school, Dr. Warren outlined many security pieces in place to ensure staff and student safety.
School doors are locked and visitors must enter through the front office vestibule that is monitored with cameras and secured with a locking mechanism to allow entry only after someone has been identified.
Staff closely monitor the playground during outside recess and physical education classes.
Active cameras are located throughout the buildings.
Emergency panic buttons are in the schools to alert police of an intruder.
Classrooms lock from inside the classroom.
Teachers and students conduct annual active shooter training and coordinate training with police and fire.
Schools conduct ongoing health assessments with students and monitor concerning social media sites.
Strong social/emotional curriculum builds a sense of community and positive relationships with our students and staff.
Board Workshop
The School Board toured the schools as part of a five-year facilities plan review process and modified the plan for the 2022-2023 school year. The Board reviewed space issues and needed maintenance in the schools.
Portrait of a Graduate
Dr. Warren announced the Portrait of a Graduate, created by the Strategic Planning Committee. The Portrait of a Graduate represents the school district's vision for students’ character traits and competencies that students need to succeed in high school, college, career, and life. Dr. Warren explained that these key characteristics will help guide the District’s instruction with students as curriculum and Social Emotional Learning programs are implemented. The Curriculum and Instruction Department will work with committees to imbed the instruction of these characteristics throughout the year.
The key characteristics outlined in the Portrait of a Graduate include:
Global Citizenship
Empathy
Critical Thinking
Collaboration
Adaptability
Perseverance
Dr. Warren provided the Board with a more detailed plan of the five-year D103 Strategic Plan goals for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. These goals include action plans for Critical Thinking/Problem Solving, Individualized Learning, Social/Emotional Learning, and Infrastructure.
Bus Driver Shortage
Dr. Warren updated the Board on the bus driver shortage. Although the District is short on drivers, the transportation department created a plan so that every student who did not opt-out of transportation is routed. To date there have been about 190 students who have opted out of busing. Buses will be full, including three students per seat, and there will be longer ride times. Every substitute driver is driving so when there are driver absences, a route will not run that day.
