BPS K-6 Vocal Music Curriculum
Mission
The three essential objectives in music are
- Students will sing,
- Students will play instruments and
- Students will read music (describe music for Kindergarten)
Kindergarten Music
Units
- voice choice (using singing, speaking, whispering, shouting voice)
- steady beat
- matching pitch while singing
- identifying fast and slow
- identifying loud and soft
- identifying high and low
Summative Assessments
Kindergarten EO #1 - All Students will sing.
Voice Choice Performance
- Students are to differentiate between and use their speaking, singing, whispering, and shouting voices. For this assessment, students change their voices as the instructor changes cards during a song. Advanced = used four or four voices, Proficient = used three of four voices, Progressing = used two of four voices, Beginning = used one of four voices.
- Students practice matching pitch during songs and singing games. For this assessment, students echo a phrase sung by the instructor. Students who score advanced are consistently matching pitch (no significant errors); proficient are usually matching pitch (few significant errors); progressing are occasionally matching pitch (frequent significant errors), beginning are not yet matching pitch.
Kindergarten EO #2 - All students will play instruments.
Steady Beat Performance
- Students practice playing instruments to the steady beat. For this assessment, students play an instrument to the steady beat while saying a rhyme or singing a song. Students who scored advanced consistently maintain a steady beat; proficient usually maintain steady beat; progressing occasionally maintain a steady beat, or beginning are not yet maintaining a steady beat.
Kindergarten EO #3 - All students will describe music.
Fast/Slow Assessment
- Students differentiate between fast and slow tempo. For this assessment, students listen to an excerpt of music and mark whether it is fast or slow. Advanced = 5 or 6 of 6 correct, Proficient = 3 or 4 of 6 correct, Progressing = 2 of 6 correct, Beginning = 0 or 1 of 6 correct
Loud/Soft Assessment
- Students differentiate between music that is loud or soft. For this assessment, students listen to an excerpt of music and mark whether it is loud or soft. Advanced = 5 or 6 of 6 correct, Proficient = 3 or 4 of 6 correct, Progressing = 2 of 6 correct, Beginning = 0 or 1 of 6 correct
High/Low Assessment
- Students differentiate between high and low. For this assessment, students listen to an excerpt of music and mark whether it is high or low. Advanced = 5 or 6 of 6 correct, Proficient = 3 or 4 of 6 correct, Progressing = 2 of 6 correct, Beginning = 0 or 1 of 6 correct

Advanced = Consistently reads and performs rhythms accurately (no significant errors), Proficient = Usually reads and performs rhythms accurately (few significant errors), Progressing = Occasionally reads and performs rhythms accurately (frequent significant errors), Beginning = Rarely reads and performs rhythms accurately.

- Students have been learning melodies with mi, so, and la. For this assessment, students identify melodic patterns aurally. Students who scored advanced identify 5 or 6 of 6 patterns correctly; proficient identify 4 of 6 patterns correctly, progressing identify 2 or 3 of 6 patterns correctly, beginning identify 0 or 1 of 6 patterns correctly.

Rhythm Reading and Playing Performance - half notes
- Students have been learning how to read and play rhythms with half notes and half rests. For this assessment, students read and play an 8-beat rhythm that includes half notes and/or half rests. Students who scored advanced consistently read and perform the rhythm accurately (no significant errors), proficient usually read and perform the rhythm accurately (few significant errors); progressing occasionally read and perform the rhythm accurately (frequent significant errors); beginning are not yet reading nor performing the rhythm accurately.

Playing Instrument Accompaniments
- Students have been learning accompaniments on barred instruments. For this assessment, students play the instrument accompaniment while singing a song. Students who score advanced consistently play the accompaniment accurately; proficient usually play the accompaniment accurately; progressing sometimes play the accompaniment accurately, beginning are not yet playing the accompaniment accurately.

Rhythm Reading and Playing Performance - sixteenth notes
- We have been reading and playing rhythms with sixteenth note rhythms on percussion instruments. For this assessment, students read an eight-beat pattern that includes sixteenth notes. Students who scored advanced consistently read and perform the rhythm accurately (no significant errors); proficient usually read and perform the rhythm accurately (few significant errors); progressing occasionally read and perform the rhythm accurately (frequent significant errors); beginning are not yet reading and performing rhythms accurately.

Playing Instrument Accompaniment
- We have been playing instrument accompaniments on barred instruments. For this assessment, students learn a crossover accompaniment pattern and performed the accompaniment pattern while singing a song. Students who scored advanced consistently play the accompaniment accurately (no significant errors); proficient usually play the accompaniment accurately (few significant errors); progressing occasionally play the accompaniment accurately (frequent significant errors); beginning are not yet playing the accompaniment accurately.

- Students have been learning melodies with low la, do, re, mi, so, and la. For this assessment, students identify melodic patterns aurally. Melodic Reading and Playing Performance - Recorder Melodies
- Students are to read and play melodies accurately on a recorder. For this assessment, students play a melody that uses the notes B, A, G, E and D. Students will receive specific feedback on their melodic playing, as well as their technique, through a rubric. Advanced = Consistently plays the melody accurately (no significant errors), Proficient = Usually plays the melody accurately (few significant errors), Progressing = Occasionally plays the melody accurately (frequent significant errors), Beginning = Not yet playing the melody accurately.

Rhythmic Reading and Playing Performance - syncopa
- Students have been learning how to read and play syncopated (eighth-quarter-eighth) rhythms. For this assessment, students read and play an 8-beat rhythm that includes syncopated rhythms. Students who scored advanced - consistently read and perform the rhythm accurately (no significant errors), proficient - usually read and perform the rhythm accurately (few significant errors); progressing - occasionally read and perform the rhythm accurately (frequent significant errors) or beginning - not yet reading and performing the rhythm accurately.

Treble Clef Note Names Identification
- Students are to accurately identify treble clef absolute pitch names. For this assessment, students identified 20 notes on the treble clef staff. Advanced = 18-20 notes correct, Proficient = 14-17 notes correct, Progressing = 10-13 notes correct, Beginning = less than 10 notes correct
