FSDB 107th Commencement Ceremonies
Hello FSDB Classes of 2021 and their families,
I am pleased to announce that our 107th Commencement Ceremonies will be held in Kirk Auditorium at FSDB. I want to share important dates for you to remember:
- Thursday, June 3rd at 11:00 am is the Blind High School Class of 2021 graduation.
- Friday, June 4th at 11:00 am is the Deaf High School Class of 2021 graduation.
- Wednesday, June 2nd will be graduation rehearsals for seniors wearing their caps and gowns as well as having photos taken.
Both ceremonies will be viewable via live stream at www.fsdbk12.org/graduation and since they will also be recorded, you will be able to watch these later.
With ongoing health and safety challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FSDB administration has decided to exercise caution in honoring this year’s graduates and celebrating their achievements. Our decision to hold in-person ceremonies with assigned seating will be monitored on a daily basis. Should a change of plans become necessary, we will promptly notify graduates and their families.
Now I want to share with you updated information. Each graduate will now be able to bring up to four guests to their commencement ceremony! Families will register online using Eventbrite to reserve their tickets. The registration link will be sent to each graduate’s family via email.
- Registration opens: Saturday, May 1st at 8:00 a.m.
- Registration closes: Friday, May 28th at 4:00 p.m.
I would like to mention one more thing. This year’s graduates will be able to decorate their caps if they wish to do so. I look forward to seeing creative and inspirational designs. More information and details about cap decoration will be shared with graduates by the senior class sponsors.
Congratulations to the FSDB Classes of 2021! We look forward to celebrating you along with your families and friends!
Sincerely,
Tracie C. Snow

Another month is in the books. With us almost to the finish line, please make sure to encourage your students to finish strong. We have FSA and End of Course exams coming in May and the students will need to be at the top of their game. We will also be having MAP testing at the end of May. Before we know it, the year will be over, and it is my hope that we can reflect on how we continue to stay positive, focusing on doing the best we can for our students and staff each day. Thank you all for your continued support.
Southeastern Guide Dogs National Walkathon Day
FSDB is a signature sponsor of the Southeastern Guide Dogs National Walkathon Day on Saturday, May 1st. Grab your leash and get out there to celebrate by walking your four-legged friends. Your support makes an impact on people with vision loss, veterans with disabilities, and children with significant challenges.
We would love for you to share a picture of you and your furry friend this Saturday! Make sure to include these hashtags: #NatWalkDay2021, #SEGuideDogs, #Progressive Pups

Students As Teachers
Joy Carriger, Media Specialist
Orientation and Mobility in the Classroom
Jennifer Enache and Samantha Lang
On Saturday, April 17th, several teachers from the blind department participated in a class about Orientation and Mobility in the Classroom. Each teacher had hands-on opportunities to learn about sighted guide, room familiarization, tactile graphics, importance of verbal descriptions, and how sensory overload can affect our students. Each teacher used a blindfold while learning about each of these topics. Teachers loved the hands-on experiences and had a better understanding of orientation and mobility! The huge take away from class was, “Everyone has a piece of the puzzle to help our students become the independent, successful individuals they are destined to be!”
Problem of the Week and Fluency Challenge
Problem of the Week and Fluency Challenge is a weekly problem solving and fluency challenge for FSDB Students K-12. The goal of this campus wide project is to increase opportunities to engage in making sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Students submitting 5 solutions are awarded math games!
Please check out the new FlipGrid platform we are using to make problem solving opportunities more accessible and engaging!
Try them by following this link: https://flipgrid.com/mayo6758

PBS Winners
Congratulations to the following students for being recognized over the past two weeks for their efforts in demonstrating PBS (Positive Behavior Support) expectations. The teacher/staff member who recognized the student is also listed beside the nominated student:
Jacob F. - for being kind towards others when noticing another student struggling (Alexander)
Bailey T. & Madison W. - for agreeing to help teach an elementary student to read books on a Braille Note. They both have strengths and are impacting their expertise to one of our littlest learners, demonstrating all three B's. (Carriger)
Tim S. - for showing flexibility about changing plans at the last minute! (Lombardo)
