Parents cannot excuse absences for college classes; there are no excused absences for college classes. Students should let the professor know they will miss class and get the notes from a classmate; students should also consult the course syllabus to make sure they understand the professor's attendance policy and aren't missing an exam.

Juniors!
Juniors, you need to look carefully at the syllabus for any college class(es) you have on Wednesday and see if there is a midterm or test on 10/19. Determine with your professor whether you may miss class that morning to take the PSAT. Your college class should take priority over the PSAT -- there are other ways to prepare for the new SAT that you'll take next year, so taking the PSAT this fall is not critical.
Seniors!
Test date: Oct. 1 (deadline Sept. 1)
Test date: Nov. 5 (deadline Oct. 7)
Test date: Dec. 3 (deadline Nov. 3)
Test date: Oct. 22 (deadline Sept. 16)
Test date: Dec. 10 (deadline Nov. 4)
Seniors and families!
To plan ahead for the 2017-2018 academic year, complete the FAFSA as soon as October 1, 2016 to get the most aid possible.
How can parents plan ahead financially?
How much will college cost?
What kind of financial assistance is available?
Who counts as a parent?
What if the legal parent/s is/are undocumented?
- FAFSA doesn’t ask about parent’s status
- Parent’s info not sent to USCIS
- Student’s status can affect eligibility (must be eligible noncitizen)
Students and parents, get FSA IDs early:
FSA ID replaced Federal Student Aid PIN in May 2015
Student and parent can get FSA ID any time
Each person MUST set up his/her own FSA ID for privacy purposes and to avoid confusion
What’s the best way for the parent and student to collaborate on the FAFSA?
FAFSA belongs to student
Student and parent access IRS DRT separately
Student signs w/FSA ID; parent signs with his/her own FSA ID
Parent with no SSN puts all zeroes
Accessing and signing from different locations is possible

Course Updates
A former Middle College student and current UCLA senior, Maria Ayala, came to speak with all the individual classes last week. She spoke with students about her transition to UCLA, her college applications process, and what academic advice she could lend to students. Maria is currently spending her fall quarter in Europe (the first time she’s ever been out of California!) and will graduate from UCLA in May, after completing only her third academic year there.
CCR: We've been talking about pathways to college degrees and the requirements needed to graduate from high school and get into college. We've also covered time management strategies and discussed research on the effects of multi-tasking on the brain.
English 3: After exploring ideas surrounding what constitutes our ideas about the American dream, and discussing whether or not the dream is equally accessible to all, students are now transitioning into reading the play The Crucible, an allegory comparing the Salem Witch Trials to the McCarthyism era.
US History: We are wrapping up our first unit on the founding documents. Students have been studying the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and analyzing primary documents from marginalized voices not included in these documents. They will be writing a document based essay to examine how our founding ideals of liberty, democracy, opportunity, rights and equality are identified in these documents.
SENIORS
CCR: Students completed an infographic summarizing their Target/Reach/Backup schools. They are now working on building a resume that they can use when requesting letters of recommendation.
English 4: We've wrapped up our first writing unit, which focused on narratives, and have started reading Life of Pi. We're also starting to learn about different approaches to literary theory.
Government: We are wrapping up Unit 1 on the Roots of Democracy and Political Ideologies by doing a Socratic discussion on the current state of our democracy.
