March is Reading Month
We are so excited to begin a new project to support our reading! Students will be challenged to complete reading activities each day in school and/or at home. Please support this endeavor at home by participating in the calendar’s activities and helping your child(ren) meet their reading goals for the month.
Our goal during March is Reading Month is to increase our students’ awareness about their world neighbors and poverty while inspiring them to help Free Wheelchair Mission build a better world by providing wheelchairs for people who need them. Free Wheelchair Mission has found a way to build affordable wheelchairs and distribute them to people who need them all over the world. More information can be found on their website at https://www.freewheelchairmission.org/
Each student will receive a calendar for March with various reading activities to complete each week. This is meant to be a fun incorporation of reading into Reading Month. Students are aware that activities not completed during a school day can be enjoyed by the whole family at home together! Simply color each day your child(ren) participate and sign at the end of the month. Our school goal is at least 80% participation. At the end of the month, calendars will be collected and totaled for our percentage. For every 20% participation, our Tomek PTO will donate ONE WHEELCHAIR through Free Wheelchair Mission. If we reach our school goal, 4 wheelchairs will be donated.
We are very excited to get our students reading during March is Reading Month. Part of our mission here at Tomek is to foster a love for reading in our students and an appreciation for our world’s diverse people and cultures. We encourage you to help us achieve that goal!
Thank you and happy reading!

Lost and Found
Our lost and found is overflowing! Are you missing any hats, gloves, boots, etc? If so, please check the lost and found located in the hallway leading to the cafeteria. Your child’s items may be there waiting to be rescued. We will donate any unclaimed/recovered items during spring break to local charities. THANKS
HOMEWORK SOLUTIONS THAT WORK
Like an actor rehearsing his lines or a batter working on his swing, your child does homework to practice what he learns in school. And if he’s like most youngsters, homework brings occasional challenges. Here are solutions to common problems he might face.
Getting started
When your child gets home from school or after-school care, he might want to relax for a little while, or he may want to jump right in and work. Have him try each method for one week and keep track of how it goes. He could write notes in each day’s calendar square. (“Went great!” or “Hard time getting started.”) After two weeks, he can review the notes to see which routine worked best.
Staying motivated
Does your youngster ever feel restless when he’s doing homework? Suggest that he get up and move to a new spot. For example, he might finish his vocabulary assignment at the kitchen table and then read his science chapter on the porch. A planned break (say, to have a snack or take a walk) can also give him a second wind.
Solving problems
Help your child make a list of strategies he can use when he gets stuck. For a math assignment, he might try tools like a number line or find sample problems in his book. When he’s reading, he could look up words in a dictionary or reread a paragraph. Tip: If he’s still stumped, he might call a friend or write down his question to ask his teacher the next day

Tiger Traits
GOOD CONSEQUENCES
Behaving well and working hard pay off! Help your child see the results of her efforts—you’ll find yourself scolding her less often as she learns self-discipline.
Tie good behavior to nice outcomes
If your youngster is quiet when you’re on the phone, you might say, “You were so patient while I made that call. Would you like to play a game now?” Or when she goes to bed without a struggle, point out how energetic she seems the next morning.
Recognize success
Maybe you’d like your child’s room to be neater. Tell her that if she keeps it clean for a month, you’ll help her rearrange or redecorate it. By that time, picking up will probably be a habit. And she’ll enjoy her room so much that she’ll be motivated to keep it that way. Tip: Try not to use rewards like toys or food. You’ll train your youngster to expect something in exchange for behaving well. Plus, offering food as a reward can lead to unhealthy eating habits.
Tiger Trait of the Month - INQUIRER
Dear Tomek-Eastern Families,
As we continue our journey in preparing students for the 21st century, we are helping our students to learn and live the attributes of the Learner Profile. This month focuses on the attribute of being an INQUIRER. As inquirers, students are encouraged to develop their natural curiosity. Within the school day, they will have opportunities to gain the skills needed to conduct inquiries, investigations, ask questions and develop research skills. They are working towards becoming independent, life-long learners.
Our goal is to help students see connections that can be made beyond school and that can occur at home and in their communities.
Throughout the month, please ask your child to share the lessons, class discussions, and literature that they have experienced that focused on being an inquirer.
If you observe your child being an “inquirer” (asking about how things work, why things happen, exploring nature, or tinkering with things), please mention this to your child and them to realize the connections they are making.
Mr. Young
