Welcome to Edcamp KC!
Choice Based Learning
Truman High School
Edcamp KC was an awesome opportunity to showcase and learn new teaching strategies. You can follow the information with #edcampkc. I am finally into my 5th year of teaching, but there are so many new ideas and resources for the technology we have now! I felt blessed that I had to opportunity to talk to so many qualified teachers.

Assessments
I attended two sessions over assessment. The one idea I LOVED hearing about was how teachers are using students as peer tutors in their classes. This allows students who have grasped the material to create new and interesting ways to share their learning with their classmates! It seems like it can be great in a PBL and SBG world. I had a small day on Friday where some students took on that leadership role and exceeded my WILDEST expectations!
Critical Thinking
The teachers in this room shared the knowledge that critical thinking is hard to achieve at all grade levels. Some of our discussion revolved around shared expectations of research and reporting through the grade levels. We need to teach our students how they are expected to use this tool that they now have access to! However, even without our 1:1 world, teachers can drive critical thinking based on the questions they are asking. I like to have students argue and try to convince me and their peers of their reasoning. We learned of leading researcher for increasing rigor-Dylan Wiliam!
Flipped Learning
The session on flipped learning had so many different teacher experiences shared from things that have had great success to teacher flops! If you are considering a flipped classroom, the video has to be part of an established expectation. That means if students don't do well on their entrance ticket or didn't watch the video they need to have a mini-lesson while others can move on to the activity. Another fresh idea, was the addition of Easter Eggs into teacher videos! An Easter Egg is a small inside joke, or hidden message the students can look for in the videos. GET CREATIVE! Have the students record reflections to play for their parents at conferences. Mary D even won a screencasting program while at Edcamp.
