A Note from Dr. Miles...
Good morning Parents and Guardians!
We all had a fun-filled week showing our King's Highway school spirit! Thank you for having your child participate throughout the week.
In the spirit of Read Across America, please have your child read 15-20 minutes each night. You are encouraged to join them in their reading or read to them. Not only is it important that you read with your child for the fun of it, but it helps them develop literacy skills and gives you both the opportunity to stay connected as they are growing and become independent over time. Researchers have found that students who are not proficient in reading by the time they are in third grade are 4x more likely to dropout of high school. PLEASE partner with us to ensure that all of our students gain, maintain, and sustain proficiency in reading, especially our K-2 students who are learning to read.
(Academy Award) Fun Fact for Women's History Month: Kathyrn Bigelow is the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director. Her 2010 Oscar came from the film, The Hurt Locker. This critically-acclaimed film garnered six awards that night including Best Picture.
BEHAVIOR: We currently have 451 misconduct referrals for the school year. We have total of 474 students in our school and 94 students have contributed to the number of misconducts. The number of misconducts are inclusive of both school and bus misconducts. This is very indicative of the need for the school and home to stay connected and work together to effectively address and share with our students, your child, the importance of showing P.R.I.D.E. every day when they are in school and on the bus. We are doing our best to meet the academic, and social and emotional needs of all of our students. As we less than 60 days left of school, I am counting on you and our school team to work together by communicating and checking in regarding how your child is progressing or not, and how they are socially and emotionally in class. These areas truly matter in the overall performance and well being of your child. We value ALL you do to help make the students King's HIghway the best they can be!
ABSENCES: YOUR CHILD'S PRESENCE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO US!
Parents please be advised that when your child is absent from school, you MUST have a note explaining their absence when they return. You have three days to have the note into the office. If a note is not received in that time, it becomes an ILLEGAL/UNLAWFUL absence. You may send the note directly to the attendance secretary Ms. Kenisha Archey-Cole at archeycolek@casdschools.org. Sending notes with your child may not be received as they may forget to give them to their teacher.
Thank you,
Dr. Miles
