Dear South School Families:
As spring approaches and the weather improves, middle school students have a tendency to become more relaxed in their focus on details, classroom assignments, and behavior. Our hope is that our students can enjoy their Spring Break, relax and return to school feeling rejuvenated and focused to finish out the rest of the school year strong.
WIth the weather changing we wanted to send a reminder regarding our expectations for student dress.
General Guidelines
- Tops, pants, shorts and skirts should be worn so that undergarments are not visible.
- Students should wear tops where the back and abdomen are covered.
- Students should NOT wear shorts or skirts where their bottom is exposed.
- Hats or hoods may not be worn in school.
- Any clothing displaying drug or alcohol symbols, and or clothing that is determined to be sexually suggestive or promote inappropriate behavior is not allowed.
Your child may be asked to change or cover up their clothing if what is being worn is inappropriate for school.
We would like to congratulate Carlo D. who participated in the IESA State Wrestling Tournament. We are very proud of all of our SMS wrestler's hard work and determination this season.
We are excited to say that South's 7th grade girls volleyball team took third place in the State IESH Volleyball Tournament. They ended their season with 18 wins and 2 losses. The eighth grade girls team lost in the sectional final to TMS, and finished their season with 15 wins and 5 losses. Congratulations to both teams on their wonderful season!
We have begun planning South's end of the school year events and festivities. Here are a few highlights:
- End of 3rd Quarter - We will be celebrating all of our student's third quarter achievements during an all school assembly on March 24, 2023.
- Seventh grade students are heading on a field trip to Sunrise Lake Outdoor Education Center.
- South's musical, Matilda Jr., May 5-6, 2023.
- We are scheduling our students for next year into teams and class sections.
- Eighth grade picnic and graduation ceremony plans are being finalized.
Please remember that students are not allowed to send texts/messages during the school day. If your child feels sick, they need to communicate with their teacher and go visit the health office. The nurse will then assess the student, and the call home as necessary.
We hope you enjoy the two videos below. Dr. Morrison agreed to perform TikTok dances in a blow up costume during passing periods for participating in our food drive.
Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Greek-American Heritage Month
Greek-American Heritage month, also known as Hellenic Heritage Month, is observed in March of each year. March 25th is celebrated as Greece’s National Independence Day.

Irish-American Heritage Month
Irish–American Heritage Month is celebrated by proclamation of the President and Congress in the United States to honor the achievements and contributions of Irish immigrants and their descendants living in the United States.
It was first celebrated in 1991 and coincides with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in March.
Nowruz: March 21
The word Nowruz means new day; it's the day when winter changes into spring in the northern hemisphere, and it feels like a new beginning.
Nowruz marks the first day of spring and is celebrated as the beginning of the new year by people around the world.
- Date changes year to year.
- Spelling and pronunciation may vary by country.
Women’s History Month

Ramadan: March 22-April 21
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims. During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset, they break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr.
You can exchange Ramadan greetings by saying “Ramadan Kareem,” which translates into “Have a generous Ramadan,” or “Ramadan Mubarak,” which roughly translates into “Happy Ramadan.”
