A Letter from Mr. Gadson
It is with great excitement that we welcome you back for the 2018-2019 school year at Rice Creek Elementary! Each new school year brings opportunities for academic and developmental growth in all areas.
Our instructional day starts at 8:00 am. Students are marked tardy after 8:10 am. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:30 am in our car rider line. Dismissal is at 2:50 pm and students should be picked up in the front of the school no later than 3:15 pm.
Our Open House has been rescheduled for 6 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 5 for Kindergarten and for Thursday, Sept. 6 for 1st - 5th grade students. This is a time when parents are able to come out and learn what a typical classroom day is like and the major standards students will be learning this year in their respective grade levels.
This Friday is College Colors day! Students are encouraged to wear their favorite college shirt or college colors!

RCE is a STEAM-M School!
Rice Creek Elementary is helping all students develop the world class skills identified as part of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate through a variety of innovative and progressive programs. In conjunction with three other schools in Richland School District Two, Rice Creek was awarded a Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) Grant titled MedPro 21: Healthcare for a Caring Community. The schoolwide magnet focuses on STEAM-M. STEAM-M is an educational approach to learning that will integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, Mathematics and Medical (medicine) into the curriculum and school events.
Through this grant and other initiatives, Rice Creek promotes an environment that focuses on the four Cs - Critical thinking and problem solving, Communication, Collaboration and teamwork, and Creativity and innovation. The most notable of these initiatives is the Maker and Robotics Lab. In the Lab, students are provided opportunities to utilize household objects and materials to engage in various design challenges such as tinkering and engineering projects (bridge and tower construction), problem solving activities (egg drop and paper airplane flight time), as well as Lego builds. The Lab also provides a place for computer science instruction and robot coding.
The ECHO Lab (Educating Children on Health and Occupations) is a unique learning lab which has been designed to provide an opportunity for students to engage in learning about body functions and health occupations such as sports medicine, physical and occupational therapy, and orthopedics while participating in movement activities. Additionally, focused learning days provide all students with integrated classroom lessons on medical and health topics.
Online Literacy Guide for Parents
Supporting Early Literacy at Home: A Parents’ Guide is an online resource from the State Department of Education's Office of Early Learning and Literacy designed to provide
information for parents and caregivers so they can support their children’s early literacy
development. Research shows that parent/caregiver involvement is the number one predictor of early literacy success as well as future academic success. The guide provides information and strategies that will equip parents and caregivers with tools to support children from birth through the beginning years of school. Each module includes a video introduction, resources to view, resources to read, and a place to reflect and respond.
