Dragons in the Spotlight
Congratulations to Young Entrepreneur Academy (aka YEA!) student Sophie Sajnani! At April’s YEA! Investor Panel Event, not only was Sophie fully funded for her Business Idea, but was also selected to represent Beaverton at May’s 10th Annual Saunders Scholars National Conference & Competition at R.I.T. in Rochester, NY.
As the CEO of Taschen, Sophie, had a wonderful experience meeting over 60 other middle and high school entrepreneurs from all over the country. While Sophie’s BackMenger was being modeled to the judges, she was especially pleased when one of the judges mouth dropped open as she witnessed the first transformer bag of its kind for the dynamic path-breaking youth of today.
Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce YEA! Program Manager, Evelyn Orr, encourages friends of Sophie to come see her and her fellow CEOs at the YEA! Trade Show on May 29th, 5-7 pm at Big Al’s in Beaverton. Come help celebrate with Pizza and free Bowling. For more information go to https://beaverton.org/bold/beaverton-yea/.
Each year our middle school students design and perform an independent investigation. Their projects were then presented at our ISB EXPO. Some courageous 6th graders asked to be judged, to see if they could "compete" at the District fair.
Below is a list of ISB students who qualified for the Beaverton K-8 Science EXPO last week at Techtronics. We are very proud of the accomplishments of these young scientists. They were able to "showcase" their science projects, and discuss their understanding of each project.
Way to go Dragons!!

Plant-for-the-Planet Academy Coming Up
4th-12th Grade Students are invited to attend the UN’s Plant-for-the-Planet Academy on the Climate Crisis and Social Justice and earn 5 hours of Community Service.
The United Nations-sponsored Plant-for-the-Planet Academies are free, one-day Academies for youth to learn and take action on Climate Change. There is an Academy in our area, open to all students, on Saturday, June 9, 2018.
At Plant-for-the-Planet youth teach other youth to become Climate Justice Ambassadors who are knowledgeable, caring, and good at communicating about Climate Change and who receive ongoing support in working to stop and reverse Climate Change. Youth learn:
• the science of Climate Change & Recovery
• how Climate Change impacts people everywhere
• the importance and how-to of planting trees
• how to make effective presentations and influence policy.
Since 2007, Plant-for-the-Planet has empowered more than 66,000 children in 66 countries to live in a reflective and principled way to stop Climate Change; this includes planting more than 15 billion trees so far.
At this Academy we will be joined by VIPs, including one official from the State of Oregon. Teachers can sign up to volunteer at an Academy whether they have children or not. Parents will learn about Climate Change as part of a parents’ workshop happening during the morning.
Online registration and more information is available at: ClimateChangeRecovery.org.
This activity is not sponsored or endorsed by the Beaverton School District or the International School of Beaverton.

It is an organization helping people who are homeless and helping people transition out of homelessness. FRISB
Welcome to the New FRISB Board Members!
Five new board members were elected at the May 14 General FRISB meeting. They will begin their official duties on July 1.
Aaron Metcalf – President
Naomi Morrison – VP – Community Building
Sarah Rios-Lopez – Co-Volunteer Coordinator (& GN19 Chair)
Nadjoua Moumen – Member-at-Large
Hirally Santiago – Secretary
FRISB Still Needs a Co-Volunteer Coordinator
Co-Volunteer Coordinator
- Manage our fantastic ISB volunteers via the district's Better Impact volunteer system (training provided)
- Enter volunteer opportunities in the system as they come up
- Recruit volunteers for school events via email (through Better Impact)
- Mostly work from home on your own time
- Work with another Co-Volunteer Coordinator to share responsibilities
- Attend monthly FRISB meetings
No PTO experience is needed, just a few hours of your time each month and an interest in helping to support ISB.
Monthly FRISB board meetings give meeting attendees a chance to hear from Ms. O’Neill on how things are going at ISB as well as discussing ways to support staff and students.
Culture Week Committee Members Needed!
We are looking for parents interested in joining the Culture Week Committee (for 2018-19). Although planning does not really begin until September, we would like to get the committee started in the next couple of months. Culture Week is a tradition at ISB and includes speakers, activities and international snacks. It is a highlight for the students each year. It is held the first week of second semester and is almost entirely planned and produced by parent volunteers.
- Culture Week will be at the end of January, but it takes several months to plan and implement the activities, speakers and other aspects of CW.
- If you have cultural or international experiences to share, we need your help.
- If you have event planning skills or organizational aptitude, we need your help.
- If you know people who have cultural or international experiences to share, we need your help.
- If you have some time and would be willing to attend a few meetings in the fall and winter (held during school hours) to help with planning, we need your help.
- Much of our planning and work on this special week is done from home. We meet biweekly to sync our efforts and work together to implement ideas and plans.
- Please contact FRISBoard@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you would like to join this very important committee.
