Kindergarten: Kindergarten has been enjoying a crowd favorite Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds and Illustrated by Peter Brown. We read the book together and then learned how to draw Creepy Carrots from Peter Brown himself! (via video) They were then challenged to create a structure using building materials that would keep the creepy carrots from creeping! Along with the creepy carrot STEM challenge they were also challenged to create a gate for the 5 Little Pumpkins from the infamous song and book which they have been singing during lineup after checkout. We will continue to read books by Peter Brown in the coming weeks!
1st Grade: First graders have been busy preparing for our upcoming author/illustrator visit with Bryan Collier. They have been listening to his books both in their classroom and the library! We have enjoyed taking a trip to New Orleans to learn about Trombone Shorty and his amazing music as well as visiting the South during the Civil Rights Movement in Martin's Big Words and Rosa. Bryan collier creates his illustrations using watercolor and collage. We will be creating small collage hand prints to showcase when he visits Garner on November 7th!
2nd Grade: Second graders have been busy preparing for our upcoming author/illustrator visit with Bryan Collier. They have been listening to his books both in their classroom and the library! We have enjoyed taking a trip to New Orleans to learn about Trombone Shorty and his amazing music as well as visiting the South during the Civil Rights Movement in Martin's Big Words and heading east to South Carolina to learn about Dave the Potter. Third & Fourth Grade
3rd Grade: Third grade has been focusing on learning about call numbers and searching for books in the library catalog which we call Destiny Discover. The goal is that all students will be able to search for and locate books in the library as independently as possible. They have also been enjoying book trailers that promote the Iowa Children's Choice and Goldfinch books for this school year. Any student who reads or listens to at least 2 will be able to vote in the Spring! Up next we will focus on Digital Citizenship!
4th Grade: Fourth grade has also bee focusing on call numbers and using the library catalog. The version of the catalog we are using this year is a bit different so we have been exploring the new interface while also talking about how call numbers help us to locate books. Their skills were put to the test in a team scavenger hunt where they had to search for books in the library. they also played a shelving game called Mrs. Lodge's Library online to put books in order! They have also been enjoying book trailers that promote the Iowa Children's Choice and Goldfinch books for this school year. Any student who reads or listens to at least 2 will be able to vote in the Spring! Up next we will focus on Digital Citizenship!
Fifth & Sixth Grade
5th Grade: 5th grade has been working on a Book Review project using Thinglink. Students had to choose a favorite book and they will be adding links to the book cover using this site. Some of things they will include are the author's photo, a book trailer if they can find one, images that they think represent the main character and setting and a recommendation on why they think others should read it. Students will be sharing these with their peers in the coming weeks!
6th Grade: 6th grade is well into the planning phases for creating their own book trailers. Students had to choose a favorite book and they are working through a planning guide to storyboard out the video they will be creating in the next couple of weeks. These will be shared with their peers and posted so other students can see them and hopefully get some new book recommendations from their classmates!
