RHS Athletics Winter Recap
The winter season is almost complete. Here’s a recap of some highlights:
- The Northeastern Shamrocks (hockey coop) has qualified for the state tournament. They capped off their regular season with a 5-2 win on senior night. First round will be March 4th. Opponent & time TBD.
- Our Indoor Track & Field team sent 5 athletes to compete in the class M state meet. Many of them accomplished personal bests at this meet. Alyssa Sirianni earned NCCC all conference honors in 55m hurdles.
- Boys basketball narrowly missed qualifying for the state playoffs after a heartbreaking 1 point loss on the last game of the year. On a bright note they did qualify for the conference tournament and earned their first win in a conference tournament in 10 years. Both Justin Collins and Lorenzo Percy earned NCCC all conference recognition.
- Girls basketball also just missed qualifying for the state tournament this season. Emily Collins was selected as a NCCC all conference player.
- Wrestling showed an increase in participants this season. Each team member showed an improvement throughout the season. 6 team members participated in the class M state tournament.
- Cheerleading hosted the first ever NCCC Championship cheer event this year. 5 schools performed including Central Connecticut State University. Our team did a fantastic job and they showcased their new uniforms for the first time. They will compete Saturday March 2nd in the state competition.
- Boys swimming competed with South Windsor this season as a “team of one”. We have two student athletes who compete. Colton Labrecque qualified for the state meets in a number of events. Brandon Burchell is very close and has one more chance to qualify. Best of luck.
- Girls gymnastics had two participants this year, Jordan Kermode and Makayla Theriaque. The also compete as a “team of one” and had a great season.

Save a Life Tour
After the presentation, students were able to use the texting and driving simulators during their lunch, Health class, or ROCK Block. The simulator allowed students to experience first hand the consequences of texting and driving.

All FFA students had the opportunity to hear the National President speak. There were also several students competing in and helping with the Public Speaking Contests that afternoon as well!
News from the Cafeteria
On February 19th, the students warmed up with some Hot Chocolate Milk at breakfast. With assistance and resources from the New England Dairy Council, the hot chocolate milk promotion included a photo booth, a cow mascot, and lots of fun cow facts. Did you know that milk arrives at your local grocery store within 48 hours of leaving the farm?
Milk is an important source of calcium, vitamin D, and protein that helps support growing bones. It is recommended that children and adolescents ages 9 years and older should consume three servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy foods each day. At school, the cafeteria offers plenty of dairy options, including fat-free or low-fat milk at breakfast and lunch.
Are you a student athlete? Chocolate milk’s ratio of carbohydrate to protein makes for a perfect recovery drink after a tough workout. Fuel your day with chocolate milk!
Hot chocolate milk will be available at breakfast for the remainder of the school year.

February Artist of the Month
Joylissa Chavez - 12th grade
Art Classes Enrolled in: Clayworks III & IV
Bio: Joy cannot remember a time that creating art did not make her happy. Until high school, she never knew that it was possible to use clay to make intricate and precise structures. When she was younger, she learned to love drawing and painting. As she got older though, different types of art were the only way for her to relax and destress during stressful points in her life. This also allowed her to go outside of her comfort zone when creating different projects. In college, Joy hopes to continue to take art classes like the ones that she has taken at Rockville.
Fun Fact: Joy was born in San Francisco, California.
World Language
As part of Spanish club, students created kites modeled like the kites created on All Saints Day in Guatemala. After the Day of the Dead, there is a festival where huge kites are displayed and paraded through the streets. This tradition comes from the Maya and originated over 3,000 years ago. In Spanish club, we will continue to create projects that represent cultural practices in Spanish Speaking Countries.

MARCH UPCOMING EVENTS
Unified Sports
On March 5th, the Rockville Unified team held its annual Unified Basketball Round Robin. This year it included Simsbury, East Windsor, and Tolland. Everyone had a great time and the camaraderie between teams was awesome. All the athletes enjoyed their opportunity to be in the spotlight.
A special thank you to Diana Schultz and the Honor society for making signs for the RHS athletes and team signs for the other teams. They also provided a wonderful spread for the teams to eat after the game and enjoy some social time together!
RHS Students are Saving Lives!
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? According to the CDC, every 40 seconds, someone in the US has a heart attack and that equals 735,000 Americans per year.
Despite this, there is some good news! There are 18 RHS students enrolled in the First Aid & CPR course this quarter. By the end of the month, they will be able to help save the life of someone suffering from a heart attack or worse, someone suffering from cardiac arrest. The primary purpose of the American Red Cross based class is to help students recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing, and first aid emergencies. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an American Red Cross certification in Adult & Pediatric CPR, AED, and First Aid.
Here, students are practicing their CPR skills and learning how to use an AED using a simulator.
