PLC - Collaborative Norms
Posing Questions
Effective in gaining a better understanding of a topic or to dig deeper into a question being asked by a colleague. We use questioning to be sure we are understanding what others have to say, as well as the impact for ourselves and our students.
Paraphrasing
Used to restate what we understand from others, to be sure we TRULY understand. This can be a great practice at the close of a meeting or when completing a discussion to be sure we are all on the "same page" with what has been decided and next steps. It is also a good practice when in the midst of a discussion by paraphrasing what a colleague has said or asked to make sure you understand their perspective or understanding.
There will be table tents for each team to have visible at meetings to support the practice of these norms to support collaboration.

Student Support Teams - SSTs
1. If a student is struggling AND had an SST in place last year, which you can see in Infinite Campus, you will want to review what was done last year and begin with the strategies that were in place to support. The advantage to this is that you can choose to use the interventions already used OR can select a different one that you feel would meet the student's needs.
2. If the students is struggling and has NOT been on an SST previously, you will need to put an intervention in place to address the student's need. You can use the resource above for ideas OR can talk to Sue, Dawn, Kelly, Meghan/Heather (academic), Doug (behavior) for other suggestions.
3. When you put an intervention in place, you will need to collect data for 4-6 weeks BEFORE you begin the formal SST process.
- If you see gains from your intervention, YAY! Keep it up!
- If you see no gains from your intervention, complete the SST form in Infinite Campus AND email Sue to notify that you have submitted the form.
4. Once you have notified me about the completed form, I will set a date/time for us to discuss concerns and interventions, review your data, and look at next steps.
Book Study Highlight
This is a brain issue, not a behavior issue. Change won't happen overnight. Change and healing of our most challenging students will always be a process. . . it will take time.
We want to shift from a fear-based, power-based culture to a relationship-based and love-based culture. This will take time as well!
The key to change is to be consistent in all interactions with our students. It requires a shift from everyone, not just a few. The success of a shift requires the collective whole!

Kagan: Mix-Pair-Share
The class “mixes” until the teacher calls, “pair.” Students find a new partner to discuss or answer the teacher’s question.
Setup: Teacher prepares questions to ask questions.
Students silently mix around the room--Play Music--promotes a fun culture in your room and helps with management
Teacher calls “Pair.”
Students pair up with the person closest to them and give a high five. Students who haven’t found a partner raise their hands to find one.
Teacher asks a question and gives think time or students have something to share.
Students share with their partners using:
Timed Pair Share--for discussion questions (example: how do you think we can save the rainforest)
RallyRobin--for list of items (example: name animals that live in the rainforest)
Mrs. Alber’s class last year(click link to watch video)--she uses a doorbell for students to know when to mix and pair.
The video below shows how a classroom used mix-pair-share with writing.
Let me know if you want support with this engagement structure or any Kagan support.

Thank you to Jamie and Kaylie for working on our popcorn for the Charger Cart.

Blue Forms, Minor Forms, and Major Forms
Blue Forms - This is only filled out when you send a student to a buddy room, the student elopes from your room, or you call the office for support.
Minor Forms - This is for minor behaviors that you handle in your room. Please remember to make parent contact for frequent minors and log those in Infinite Campus.
Major Forms - This form is for things that go beyond minors. Students are fighting, for example. These should be filled out immediately following the incident and the form should be sent to the office. Let me or Sue know so we can handle it right away. If it's something that you could write up, put in our box at the end of the day to deal with the next day, then it doesn't qualify as needing a major form. These are for issues that must be addressed immediately with a possible consequence from me or Sue.

Important to Remember
*Do you have a student who might benefit from some outside tutoring? Talk with Heather Nelson to get a referral form for Whiz Kids. You will need to talk with parents to get their approval for the referral, but it is a WONDERFUL program and a great partnership with SOMA Church that benefits our kids!
