Director's Message
End of the 2021-2022 School Year
Hello, CATEC Families!
It's a wrap on the 2021-2022 school year! Thank you to all our students, families, and staff who made this year a great one. It was wonderful being back in the building full-time and having a normal school year. Congratulations to all our Completers. If you missed our Completer Ceremony, make sure you read the section below about the event and view our videos.
In reflecting on our year, I am so proud of the accomplishments our students had. Whether it was passing industry certifications, earning industry credentials, earning college credit through one of our local community college partners, going on a job interview for the first time, or just developing skills and interest in a new field, we are very proud of you. Next year we will be celebrating CATEC's 50th anniversary of being an essential educational option in the Charlottesville. We look forward to what's to come next year and beyond.
Have a safe and fun summer! We look forward to seeing our returners in August. If you are a returning driver, please hold on to your parking pass!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Carter

Learn More about CATEC's Auto Service Technology Program
National Automotive Service Professionals Day is June 12th. As we wrap up our school year, CATEC is celebrating its Automotive Service Technology program, its graduates who will enter the community as technicians, and the local industry that supports CATEC’s program with guidance, employment opportunities, and equipment.
Curriculum
CATEC's two-year Automotive Service Technology program is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)- and National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF)-accredited program. Students learn all aspects of automotive repair, safety, and customer service by concentrating on the eight automotive areas needed to become an ASE-certified master technician. Students extensively practice shop and personal safety. They identify and demonstrate usage of tools and equipment, research vehicle and service information and history, and prepare vehicles for service and for the customer. Students develop skills in inspecting engine assembly, repair, and performance. They study lubrication, cooling systems, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems. Students who successfully complete this program will be prepared to take and pass ASE exams and will be prepared for post-secondary education opportunities.
Duel-Enrollment and Credentials
The Auto Service Technology program boasts a robust enrollment, with students earning dual-enrollment college credits from Reynolds Community College in addition to their high school elective credits. Students earn college credits for curriculum that includes automotive systems, climate control, electricity, and engine repair, and braking systems. They can also earn up to 10 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) industry credentials. ASE industry testing is specially designed to evaluate and certify students who are studying in the automotive service industry. The ASE Education Foundation, in partnership with career and technical education advocate SkillsUSA, developed the exams to help students access professional credentials. They are a first step for students interested in building a career as an automotive service professional because they earn their first industry-recognized certifications before graduating from high school. These credentials make CATEC Auto Service Technology students marketable to local shops both during and after graduation.
Local Partnerships
The Auto Service Technology program has developed close relationships with local industry. In November 2019, Jim Price Hyundai donated a 2016 Hyundai Tucson to the program. It has used the SUV to do hands-on projects, allowing students the access they need to rapidly-evolving automotive technology. Malloy Ford donated an automotive twin post lift to the program in August 2019 as well. When Malloy Ford moved from its Pantops location to its new space, it donated the retired lift to the Auto Service Technology program. The year before, Malloy Ford gave the program two complete engines on which students will practice their skills taking apart the engines.
In addition to equipment donations, local automotive shops hire CATEC Auto Service Technology students for internships. Many of these students continue employment after they complete their CATEC program. This year, all students participated in job interview opportunities and most students took advantage of job shadowing and internships. These opportunities are made possible by local businesses that are willing to take CATEC students into their shops and teach them.
Projected Job Growth
The CATEC Automotive Service Technology program has a dual-enrollment agreement with Reynolds Community College and articulation agreements with University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH), Universal Technical Institute (UTI) and Nashville Auto Diesel College (NADC).On average, Virginia boasts a higher annual income for automotive service technicians than the national average with a projected 11% job growth.
