Crockett Cougar Chatter
April 2024
King's Kick Start
Happy April, Cougars!
On Monday, April 8th AISD will have school on Eclipse day. This is potentially a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to experience totality, so we are making the most of this educational experience. Students are learning about the Eclipse in their science classes and receive a safety lesson and eclipse glasses the day of. Our office will be closed for student pick up from 1:00-2:00 pm, as all of our students and staff will be engaged in experiencing the eclipse.
If you are a parent, teacher, or community member looking to get more involved in the Crockett Community, please consider joining the PTSA. The Crockett PTSA fundraises and hosts events that serve the entire Crockett staff and community. We have a meeting on April 9 at 6:30 in the library to plan our end-of-the-year student and staff appreciation events, as well as begin planning for the 24-25 school year. Hope to see you there! More information is below on this meeting, as well as the upcoming "Love Your Crockett Community" Event on April 23 that we are seeking caregiver volunteers for.
As we move through the rest of the semester we enter testing season. Please see all the testing dates below to ensure your student is rested and ready with their fully Chromebook and charger. Attendance is important during these days to complete required testing and meet graduation requirements.
Staff Shoutouts! (Reminder any community member can recognize an outstanding staff member by submitting a RAVE here)
Congratulations to Adrianna Hill, who is a finalist for Austin ISD Teaching Assistant of the Year! Ms. Hill is an integral part of the success of our students in the Delta program, and co-sponsor of the Gender and Sexuality Association. Thank you, Ms. Hill, for your service and for being a model of Cougar PRIDE to the AISD Community!
Congratulations to District Coach of the Year, Mario Morales! Boys soccer had a great season and we are thankful for your leadership.
April 1-5 is Assistant Principal and Librarian Appreciation Week!
Thank you Ms. Black, Dr. Gonzales, Ms. Julian, Ms. Kender, and Mr. Ortmann for all you do to support students and families and build capacity in the staff at Crockett. Campus administrators wear many hats, and their contributions are critical to the day-to-day operations of the school that make positive learning experiences for our students. I could not do my job as Principal without each of them.
Thank you to our Librarian, Ms. Gibson! In addition to maintaining the library, teaching lessons, and providing a positive lunch space, she is also responsible for ensuring that students have working Chromebooks, which are a vital tool for their learning. We appreciate her hard work and many years of service to the Crockett Community.
Prom and graduation are quickly approaching. Click the link below to find more details about these exciting and important events.

As a reminder, we will have a student holiday on Wednesday, April 10th for staff development.

"Omar has been doing wonderfully in Culinary Arts this year. He worked hard on his Travis County Youth Show project, showing a strong work ethic, determination and creativity, especially with decorating his cake. At internship, the supervisor has commented on how hard working he is, his willingness to perform whatever task is asked of him. His culinary skills are very strong and he learns quickly. He works well in a team and gets along well with his peers; oftentimes, he provides them with helpful feedback and guidance."

Health Reasons to Keep Your Child at Home
Fever: Temperature over 100º. Do NOT give medicine at home to bring the fever down and then send to school. If the child has a fever, they may be contagious and need to be kept at home.
- Your child must be fever free (without fever reducing medication like Tylenol or Ibuprofen) for 24 hours before coming back to school
- Redness of the “white part of the eye”
- Yellow, green or clear discharge from the eye (lashes may be stuck together)
- Itchy eyes
- Eyelids may be red or swollen
- The child must be cleared in writing by a US medical provider in order to return
- Everyone at home should wash hands often with soap and water and avoid touching the eyes
- If running fever, student must stay home until fever is gone and bowel movements are “normal” for 24 hours without using diarrhea suppressing medications
- Have student drink plenty of fluids and seek medical evaluation for persistent temperature and diarrhea
- Texas State Law requires certain immunizations for children to have in order to be in school. Notice will be sent home by the nurse to notify parent when shots are due.
- Persistent cough / cold should be seen by a medical provider to make sure there is no flu, bronchitis or pneumonia
- Any vomiting, especially with a fever or other symptoms.
- A minor sore throat is not usually a problem. A severe sore throat may be Strep even if there is no fever. Keep the child home from school and contact a medical provider to be cleared to be in school. Documentation from a US medical provider in writing is needed for clearance.
- Children with a skin rash should be seen by a medical provider to be cleared to be in school
