Rise Up - Volume 1, 3rd Edition
What Lies Within
Imagine Michelangelo working on David. He said that inside every block of stone dwells a beautiful statue. We just need to see it and then remove the excess material to reveal the work of art within. What is your ideal version of yourself? Colts, we all have layers of raw material that need to be removed in our life. Our greatest potential lies within us; however, we must chisel away the layers of insecurity, doubt, ego, and complacency. Every day, moment by moment, we must chisel the layers of life's labels to get to our masterpiece.
- You are stronger than you know. Believe in your ability to figure things out. Choose to be your happiest and best self in every situation. Deep within you lies a masterpiece, but it is a choice to pick the chisel up, it is a choice to remove the layers, and it is a choice to sculpt. Michelangelo said, “If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.” … This week, choose to be the best version of yourself so that we can ensure the very best education possible for our students.
Rise Up Colts; it is our time to Change the World!!

Personalized Learning
Personalized Learning: In a personalized learning environment students take full ownership of their learning. They have the opportunity to select the content that best meets their learning style and the pace they move through content. In the Connect program students must have an 80% mastery of content before moving to new content. A personalized environment is designed to meet the individual student’s needs. Teachers stand back and truly become a mentor based on real time, actionable assessment data. Teachers provide small group “workshops” as needed to assist struggling students while others move at their own pace. Whole group instruction is not the norm in a PLE (personalized learning environment).

Think Write Round Robin by Lela Mills
Students take 30 seconds to 1 minute to think about their response.
Students then take 30 seconds to 2 minutes to write the answer to the question.
(Great time to use Sentence Stems for Complete Sentences!)
THEN in teams, students take turns responding orally.
In a Single Round Robin, the rotation only goes around one time.

Pre-Conferences by Jay Forrest
One central idea that can get lost in the focus on process and policy is that T-TESS is designed to reveal thinking and encourage deliberation. Formal conversations or conferences an appraiser has with an appraisee should be structured to reveal the appraisee’s thinking. Why is the teacher or principal doing what he or she does? Upon what are their decisions and actions based?
For pre-conferences, the ultimate goal is to better understand how a teacher plans, not just what a particular lesson plan entails. Understanding planning for the particular observed lesson is a desired outcome, but pre-conferences don’t need to be just about one single lesson. It’s an opportunity to discuss the general thought processes a teacher employs when planning – how does a teacher make scaffolding decisions, grouping decisions, decisions about activities? How well does a teacher know his or her students? How does that teacher translate that knowledge into planning?
An added benefit of pre-conferences that focus on thinking as well as a particular lesson is that when reality intervenes and an observation has to be rescheduled, all an appraiser needs to do is to get and perhaps briefly discuss a new lesson plan for the rescheduled observation. The conversation from the pre-conference that reveals general thinking patterns provides ample evidence and material for determining reinforcement and refinement areas, as well as for rating the planning domain.
