The Reading Room
Reading + Thinking = Real Reading
Metacognition
This past week in The Reading Room we focused on Metacognition. Metacognition is a big word that means: thinking. Children learned that they need to think while they are reading. It is not "real reading" when we simply read the words. We need to constantly be thinking about our reading.
Metacognition Anchor Chart
You can use the Sentence Stems on this chart as a way to stimulate conversations with your child while reading together.
I'm thinking...
I'm noticing...
I'm wondering...
I'm seeing...
I'm feeling...
Read Together
Your child will have reading homework almost every night. Please be sure to read the books I send home with your child. These books are at your child's instructional reading level which means that your child needs support from an adult to read the books successfully.
Lunch Bunch and Snack Pack
Starting January 25th, students will have the opportunity to come and eat snack or lunch in The Reading Room if they would like. We will discuss books, watch inspirational videos and just enjoy each other's company. They will also have an opportunity to sing using my karaoke machine one day per week during recess. We've got some real rock stars among us.
MAPS Testing
This week and Sunday, January 25 MAPS testing will be taking place in the UES. Thus, the Reading Specialist schedule will be different. Most groups will come to reading once or twice, instead of their usual 4 times. There will be limited reading homework this week but your child may still be asked to read a chapter or a couple of pages so please check-in with them throughout the week.
Pharrell Williams - Happy (official lyrics)
Karaoke!!!
Singing is one of the best ways to improve fluency and its so much fun!!! Most of the groups this week had a chance to sing Happy. They had s much fun singing into the microphones and practicing reading the words as they sang. Try find song lyrics on Youtube of your child's favorite songs and let them read as they sing!
