Happy Holidays
Travel Information
As the Christmas break approaches, we wish to remind you of federal public health regulations related to when students are permitted to return to school after travelling outside of Canada.
Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated students under 12 years of age travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians cannot return to school or daycare for 14 days following their return to Canada, and must follow the mandatory requirements under the Minimizing the Risk of Exposure to COVID-19 in Canada Order.
Fully vaccinated students 12 years and older who travelled out of the country can return to school without delay so long as they are asymptomatic. If unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, these students are subject to the Government of Canada’s required 14-day quarantine, regardless of whether they are accompanied by a parents or guardian who qualifies as a fully vaccinated traveller.
Additional information on travel restrictions and public health regulations can be found at the Government of Canada’s website. Any questions or concerns about these restrictions should be directed to the Government of Canada, through their www.travel.gc.ca website.

Mental Health Presentation
On Monday morning, our students will be involved in a virtual presentation about overcoming struggles with mental health. Below is the biography of the presenter. We are excited to be able to share this message with our students, especially leading into the holiday season.
Biography
My name is Jean-Francois Dupras. Originally from Quebec, I have lived in Canmore, Alberta for over fifteen years.
Since my early childhood, I have always been passionate about sports and the outdoors. My spirit of adventure allowed me to discover the Canadian Rockies at the age of 20. It was while standing on the summit of Mt Rundle for the first time, 18 years ago, that I discovered a real passion for mountaineering.
Having suffered from severe depression and being affected by a bipolar disorder, mental health is a cause that is close to my heart. Through my presentations and adventures, I want to help people understand that mental illness is like any other disease. That no matter our past, our life challenges and fears, that everything is possible.
Life is like climbing a mountain... hard to climb, but the incredible view from the top is worth it.

2. YWITT – Careers in Agriculture and the Skilled Trades in Cooking

Students in Grades 9-12

Young Women in Trades and Technologies (YWITT) is a program designed to break barriers and give young women the opportunity and confidence to explore different career options in non-traditional skilled trades and technologies.
Agriculture:
The agricultural industry is both valuable and critical to our society and remains one of the largest sources of employment in many areas across Alberta and the world. It is an industry that continues to redefine itself and to present ever-evolving career opportunities. Whether it is working as a farmer, harvester, technician for farm equipment, scientist, and so on, there are an amazing number of opportunities for careers.
Careers: Beekeeper, Horticulturist, Veterinarian, Food Specialist, Seed Producer, Equine Stable Hand, Farmer, Irrigation Specialist, the list “grows” on and on…
Cook:
As the industry shifts, and the gender barrier dissipates, the opportunities for women in cooking are better than ever. The skills that we learn in the culinary arts can be applied to so many different areas in our lives. We learn organization, teamwork, cleanliness, food safety, sanitization practices, as well as the undeniably great skill behind the art of cooking.
Skilled Trades: Cook and Baker
Academics and Attendance
Student attendance is vital for success in the classroom. A recent article in the Canadian Association of Principals found that for every absence, a student's final grade could be negatively impacted by up to 1% on average. That means that for every class missed, a student's final grade could be 1% lower.
Students that are struggling academically are impacted more by missing school.
We recognize that we are still impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, and if students have illness symptoms that they need to stay home. Hopefully accessing Brightspace while students are away will minimize the impact of absences, but the key is that if students are able to be at school, that is the best place for them to learn.
At RHJ we are proud of our staff who put students first. They are working hard to ensure that we have a safe and caring environment with engaging lessons to facilitate student learning.

Returning Student Registration for 2022-23
Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) will once again conduct an online returning student registration process to confirm student registrations for the 2022-23 school year. Families of all current students—with the exception of graduating Grade 12 students—must complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2022-23 school year or advise the Division of their plans not to return to EIPS. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space. The 2022-23 returning student registration takes place Feb. 1-28, 2022.
Access to the Returning Student Registration Form is provided through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you need to set one up before Feb. 1, 2022. Create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account
