Ram Report - Parent Newsletter
Term 4 Week 10: May 29 - June 2
Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Friendly Reminder - NO SCHOOL Monday, May 29th
Good evening, Ram Fam! We hope this newsletter finds you well. It is hard to believe that this is the final newsletter of this school year. Thank you for your partnership this school year and for trusting us to provide a safe learning environment with high instructional expectations. It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know your students this year. We wish our 8th graders the best in their future endeavors as ORHS Wildcats and look forward to welcoming everyone back later this July.
There is quite a bit going on this week, and we have attempted to break it down by day in the newsletter below. We need your help in getting any remaining laptops, library books, and cafeteria charges cleared. Additionally, don't forget that a permission slip for our walk to the pool on Thursday is required for students to attend.
Finally, we tried to include important information to begin preparations for next school year. Rest assured, we will provide additional information in a newsletter mid-summer about the start back to school.
Let's finish this school year strong together! We hope our students and their families have a restful, relaxing and enjoyable summer filled with sunshine!

EVENTS FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 31ST
RMS YEARBOOK DISTRIBUTION AND SIGNING PARTY 2023
The following expectations will be reviewed with students during homeroom on Wednesday morning:
- As students are issued a yearbook, they will be asked to sign confirming they have received a yearbook.
- Students should check each yearbook for damage (missing pages, etc.) BEFORE writing in it. A book with any writing in it may not be returned. If a book is found to be defective, the student should bring it to the attention of their homeroom teacher for coordination with Dr. Kinder in the library.
- After students verify that their books are not defective, they should write their names in ink in the inside front cover. The school is not responsible for lost yearbooks.
- Students must not deface, write obscenities, or draw anything offensive in a yearbook. SUSPENSION AND PAYMENT FOR THE COST OF A YEARBOOK WILL BE CONSIDERED AS CONSEQUENCES FOR DAMAGING OR DEFACING A YEARBOOK.
- Once books have been distributed, students will go to Bond Park (front of school) for yearbook signing. Teachers & Administration will accompany students to Bond Park to help with supervision.
EVENTS FOR THURSDAY, JUNE 1ST
Last Day of School Celebration - Pool Day!
Additional information, to include a permission slip went home last week. Permission slips must be returned by Tuesday, May 30th to allow adequate time for staff to prepare and finalize plans.
Some important highlights to begin thinking about are below:
- Students must be in good standing behaviorally in order to be permitted to attend. This is a privilege which can be lost if not meeting ORS Code of Conduct expectations.
- Students should ensure all items such as laptops, chargers, library books, any fees, etc. are returned and cleared prior to the last day of school.
- Students will report to school that morning and will be walked / escorted to the pool by RMS staff. ORPD & School Resource Officer Askren will assist in coordinating the safe crossing of Illinois Avenue and Robertsville Road.
- Lockers will not be available at the pool; therefore, students will be responsible for all personal items. Cell phones will not be permitted to be used at the pool.
- All students will return to RMS to eat lunch and be dismissed from the school building at 12:45pm. Students may bring a small bag with a change of clothes if they wish to change prior to returning to school. There will be a designated time for them to do so prior to leaving the pool site.
- Students are encouraged to keep in mind that this is a school sponsored event. While we absolutely understand it is a pool day, we ask that swimwear be kept age appropriate and within reason for a school sponsored event.
Additional End of Year Announcements
Bus Riders Next School Year
Online Student Transportation Registration – Effective June 1, 2023, parents will be asked to register their child for transportation services next school year. Any family wanting transportation services at the opening of the 2023- 2024 school year will have until July 14, 2023, to register. All students requiring transportation should register for transportation services regardless of past rider-ship history. The online transportation registration will remain open for the remainder of the school year. Additional information, including where to sign up will be communicated to families and posted online later this week.
ORS Transportation Department will be able to provide a higher level of service, with fewer route changes, if we can reduce the number of students registering to ride a bus who have no intentions of riding a bus at this time. Completed online transportation registration forms will automatically go to First Student Transportation Department.
New Student K-12 On-Line Registration
Monday, June 5, 2023, online registration will open for all students NEW to Oak Ridge Schools. This is the same process that was used this year to conduct Kindergarten Registration. RMS will have access to a computer for families that need to register but don't have access at home. If your student is already enrolled in ORS there is no action necessary for enrollment at this time.

Please ensure to reach out to Mrs. Christy Free, RMS Vice Principal, with any questions or concerns (ccfree@ortn.edu). For students that were borderline in the placement process, a parent override request may be considered. These requests must be submitted to Mrs. Free by June 1st. This is imperative as we will immediately begin the scheduling process next year at the conclusion of this school year.
ORHS Summer Reading - Rising 9th Graders
Please find attached the ninth grade summer suggested reading letters. There is no required summer assignment for the upcoming ninth graders; however, the ninth grade teachers have selected a variety of texts for students reading pleasure and are offering extra credit for any student who chooses to read a selection and complete a short activity.

RMS PTSA Direct Drive
2022-2023 DIRECT DRIVE
A new Oak Ridge resident has pledged to donate up to $10,000 to RMS's PTSA by way of a donation drive match. What does that mean? Well, for every dollar that you donate to the PTSA, another dollar will be matched by our donor. So, a $20 donation by you becomes a $40 donation to PTSA, a $50 donation becomes $100, and...well, you get the point. Help us leverage every dollar from this generous donor by pitching in with your donation!

School Meals No Longer Free for All Students 2022-2023
While meal applications are being processed, there have been noticeable extra charges for a la carte items purchased by students. For example, if a child is “FREE” or “Reduced”, the first meal items are covered. However, if an extra slice of pizza or another a la carte items is purchased, it’s being charged at full price. The application submitted only covers one main meal. In processing meal applications, the date being entered on the application is the date the form was signed by the parent. Hopefully, this will help lower the main meal costs but will not take care of the extra food items purchased by the student. It takes Skyward overnight to make those changes.
