A Message From Principal Bare
Dear AHS Families,
My favorite night of the school year so far was this past Tuesday when I had the joy of watching our Special Olympics Unified Sports basketball team in action. This wonderful program joins students with intellectual disabilities with their peers without intellectual disabilities. The emphasis is on sportsmanship, teamwork, safety, and lots of fun. It was a joy to hear the band play and watch the cheerleaders cheer for our great team of young people. The members of the team demonstrated teamwork, sportsmanship and clearly had a great time! I was so proud of each of them. Our next game is on this coming Tuesday between the Varsity boys and Varsity girls games.
I would also like for you to consider attending The Real Talk series. This series of workshops is designed for both parents and students. The topic of drug use is challenging and overwhelming for many of us. This workshop series is open to all, and appropriate for any high school student and their parent! If your goal is to learn how to proactively support your student in not engaging in drug and alcohol use, or learn more about the various substances our young people have been experimenting with, this is the workshop for you. If you are concerned that your student is using, or is heavily drug involved, this is also the workshop for you.
Come support each other as parents and invite your friends' parents! You will learn communication skills, and expand your knowledge base so you can discuss from a place of information. This series is designed for students and parents to do together, but if you would like to attend and your student is unwilling or unable, please come without them. Students will earn community service hours to attend (12 if on their own, 16 if with a parent). Wellness teachers are also offering credit in their courses for attending. I strongly encourage you to join us!
Thank you for supporting our mission to Inspire Learning for Life!

Attention Seniors-
AHS SENIORS ARE NOW IN THE MIDST OF SCHOLARSHIP SEASON.
THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY IS OUR LAST BIG PUSH!
Seniors began getting information about scholarships and how to complete scholarship applications in their College and Career Readiness (CCR) classes in early October. Seniors have also received detailed lists of scholarship opportunities available to them. The “Local Scholarships” run through the AHS Counseling Office are available on the AHS website at http://www.ashland.k12.or.us/Page.asp?NavID=2331. These applications are fillable PDFs students need to download, complete, and turn into the AHS Counseling Office by February 19th. Students have also received hard copies of the Local Scholarships “cheat sheet” list, which provides detailed information about scholarship eligibility criteria: http://www.ashland.k12.or.us/Files/LOCAL%20Scholarships.pdf.
The online “OSAC Scholarship” application opened Nov 1st and is completed and submitted online at http://www.oregonstudentaid.gov/apply-here.aspx. Students can apply for many scholarships with this one application. The counseling office has compiled a list of the 15+ scholarships on the OSAC application that are specifically for AHS students, and a list of other Oregon and Jackson County scholarships potentially available to AHS students. Hard copies of these “cheat sheet” lists are available in the College and Career Center or can be found on the AHS website: http://www.ashland.k12.or.us/Page.asp?NavID=2361. The OSAC Scholarship application has an early bird deadline of February 15th and a final deadline of March 1st at 5:00 pm.
"Senior All Night"- Needs your Help! Next Meeting February 20
- First off, we'd like to tell you a bit about Senior All Night. Parents don't need to worry on grad night because students are bused to the Family Fun Center from the hours of 11 pm to 3 am. It is a $10,000 party with activities, go-carting, bounce houses, a cash cube, food trucks and thousands of dollars in fantastic prizes! It is not something these kids are going to want to miss out on. It is a tradition that goes back over 30 years at AHS!
- Second, we need HELP! This party is put on by a group of senior parents and we could use more bodies. The next meeting is February 20th, 7pm-8pm at Bellview Elementary School. Please come and find out more about the event. We won't commit you to help unless you decide you want to! We are a friendly bunch.
- Do you own a business or feel inclined to make a donation? The attached letter tells you how you can help give these grads a safe, fun-filled night to remember!
- Do you eat at Louie's or are you looking for gifts to give to friends or family? The Senior All Night committee is selling $20 Louie's gift cards. Louie's generously donates half of that money back to the party! If you have any questions, please contact Lindsay Gates at linsegates@gmail.com.

Senior Projects Presentations--May 1
Spring Presentations will be held on Wednesday, May 1st.
Senior Projects are an important opportunity for AHS Seniors to explore subjects and interests in ways that challenge them and encourage them to go above and beyond anything they have done before. Senior Projects also teach students the importance of giving back to their community and sharing their knowledge and experiences with a wider audience. These projects are shared in a formal presentation setting where students have a chance to discuss not only what they accomplished but also their journey over the last four years of high school.

AHS School Profile- 2017/18
The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) produces yearly at-a-glance profiles for schools and districts. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education designed the School and District At-A-Glance profiles to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. At-A-Glance profiles also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.
