Astro October Update #1
Dream big. Reach for the stars. Together we achieve success!
Principal's Message
Dear Families,
We have successfully completed our first month of school. Every year is a learning process to remember routines and how to do school. This year of course it is taking a little longer to settle into routines because it has been a long time since we have gone to school 5 days a week for full days. We are all working on building our stamina. Students are excited to be with peers but navigating social situations can be exhausting. In the past week, our Wellness Center Coordinator, Amber Owens has presented materials on navigating conflict. If your child has experienced conflict with another peer, you can use these materials to talk to your child.
If you notice a pattern of conflict that would meet the definition of bullying.
Hillsboro School District identifies the following behaviors as characteristic of bullying:
“Harassment, intimidation or bullying” means any act that substantially interferes with a student’s educational benefits, opportunities, or performance that takes place on or immediately adjacent to District grounds, at any District-sponsored activity, on District-provided transportation, or at any official District bus stop, that may be based on, but not limited to, the protected class status of a person, having the effect of:
1. Physically harming a student or damaging a student’s property;
2. Knowingly placing a student in reasonable fear of physical harm to the student or damage to the student’s property; or
3. Creating a hostile educational environment including interfering with the psychological well-being of the student.
Please let your child's teacher know so we can help to support them. Here are some additional resources on the topic of bullying and how to talk to your student.
It's important to remember that we are all still learning how to be together after such a long time apart. This takes practice and learning. Social and emotional learning is a big part of being a school community. We are working on building these skills with students in and it takes time and being open-minded about how everyone is growing and learning. You can help with this learning by checking in with them at home and developing an advocacy plan. An advocacy plan includes what your child can say at the moment when conflict is happening and knowing the adults to talk to if they have a problem.
In partnership,
Jennifer Robbins

COVID and Quarantine Information for Families
Notification of a Positive COVID Class
If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID and they were at school during their infectious period (48 hours prior to symptom onset) a COVID-19 Case Alert letter will be emailed to you. We will also send a notification through Remind letting you know to check your email. The Hillsboro School District Contact Tracing Team and Washington County Public Health officials work closely with school staff to review cohort logs and identify individuals who may have been in close contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19. If a student or staff member is determined to be a close contact, they will be contacted by the HSD Contact Tracing Team separately with further instructions. The length of the quarantine time period is 10 days from the date of last exposure with the infected person. Day 1 is the day after last exposure. This means they can return to school on the 11th day provided they do not have any symptoms of illness.
It’s important to notify us if your student tests positive for COVID-19 or experiences any of these primary COVID-19 symptoms:
Fever of 100.4°F or higher
Chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
New loss of taste or smell
We know this is a difficult time for everyone, and our hearts go out to those who are ill. More information about COVID-19, guidance for schools, and our response plans can be found on the Oregon Department of Education’s Ready Schools, Safe Learners page; the Oregon Health Authority’s COVID-19 page; and HSD’s 2021-22 School Year, and Coronavirus web pages.
Attendance
If your student is ill or has been exposed, please contact the office to let us know. See the COVID Flow Chart and Too Sick for School documents. We have to work together to keep our students safe and healthy. We appreciate all of the communication that families have provided about what’s going on with their situations at home. This communication helps us all to stay as healthy and safe as possible.
Learning from Home
We're really excited about having students back in school five days a week full-time but unfortunately there are instances when a student cannot attend school. This may be because there has been a Covid exposure in the household or a student has COVID-19 or COVID like symptoms. These are what we call a required absence. We have a specific code for that in our attendance system.
If your student is required to be absent from school they will be able to access online learning through their Google classroom. This online learning does not look like CDL from last year. There will be assignments that are posted in the classroom that can be done at a time that is convenient for the student and your family.
Every student has a Chromebook assigned to them that can go home for them to use to access assignments. If you are in need of resources or help accessing or logging in please see the links below that can answer many of your questions. Additionally if you need more support please contact the office and someone will call back added time that works to walk you through this.
