A Peek at Our Week
Writing: In poetry, we are learning that poems can be written in many ways. We can change the phrasing of a poem by using specific line breaks. We learned that we can "show, not tell" when writing poetry. Rather than telling some things about fireworks in a poem, we can show the reader what fireworks are like, using words like "BOOM!" and "FLASH!" We are learning that poems can tell stories, they can be written about a person, and we can even write special kinds of poems called acrostic poems.
Math: This week, we began working on telling time to the hour and half hour. Students labeled and made their own analog clock to bring home for extra practice. We are focusing on the correct hand placement for an "o'clock" time a "___:30" time (4:30 is half past 4 o'clock, so the hour hand should be halfway between 3 and 4). Students are expected to read and write time to the hour and half hour. This is a great thing to practice at home!
Word Study: This week, we worked with <or> and <ore>. We reviewed our secret story for <or> which tells about tells about two friends who cannot decide what they want to do when they play together. Should we do this, OR this, OR, this? We worked with words such as for, chore, more, corn, etc. Next week, we will focus on <or>.
