In December, mathematicians will be finishing Mission 3, learning the lifelong skills of multiplying and dividing big numbers.
In January, mathematicians will start Mission 5, building on their Grade 3 work with unit fractions as they explore fraction equivalence and extend this understanding to mixed numbers. This leads to the comparison of fractions and mixed numbers and the representation of both in a variety of models. Benchmark fractions play an important part in students’ ability to generalize and reason about relative fraction and mixed number sizes. Students then have the opportunity to apply what they know to be true for whole number operations to the new concepts of fraction and mixed number operations.
Mathematicians will be taken through the math workshop model in order to gain further differentiated learning experiences.

Math/Matematicas
In December, mathematicians will continue their work in Mission 3, understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions. This mission marks a significant shift away from the elementary grades' centrality of base ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra.
Mathematicians will develop flexibility with addition and subtraction of fractions so they can mentally or numerically solve, reason, and estimate their calculations. The Mission begins with concrete and pictorial work (using area models and number lines) and moves to numeric work with word problems by the end.
In January, mathematicians will move to Mission 4 which focuses on multiplying and dividing fractions. Their understanding will be deeply rooted in multiple concrete examples and pictures before they generalize to more abstract methods.
Module 4 extends mathematicians' understanding of fraction operations to multiplication and division of both fractions and decimal fractions. The module proceeds to fraction by fraction multiplication in both fraction and decimal forms.
Mathematicians will be taken through the math workshop model in order to gain further differentiated learning experiences.
ELA/La Lectura:

Math/Science Unit
In Math, children have begun exploring two- and three-dimensional shapes and objects. They identified these shapes by first noticing the characteristics; “This shape has four straight sides and four corners!”
Children will be able to describe real-world objects using shape names and position words.
Correctly name shapes, regardless of size.
Analyze, compare, and sort two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes and objects.
They created and built shapes.
We will continue to work on positional words to describe the location of objects (on, off, under, beside, between, next to, up, down).
Matematicas/Ciencia
