THE GRANT WEEKLY
WEEK OF APRIL 29th
SCHOOL EVENTS
Dear Families and GHS Community,
It is with immense pride and joy that I write to you today. On Monday evening, our Grant Constitution Team achieved the remarkable feat of winning the National Championship in Washington DC. This victory is not just a win for the team, but a win for our entire school community.
The journey to the national championship is a challenging one, filled with intense preparation and competition against the best teams across the nation. Over the last three days, our team has engaged in rigorous debates and demonstrated an unparalleled understanding of constitutional law, which led them to this incredible achievement. I am incredibly proud of the effort our students have put forth, showcasing not only their knowledge but also the values we hold dear at Grant High School.
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the coaches who have dedicated countless hours to preparing our students for success. Their expertise, patience, and encouragement have been invaluable throughout this journey.
Special thanks must also go to Angela DiPasquale, whose guidance and teaching have been instrumental in shaping the minds of our young champions. Her commitment to academic excellence and her passion for the Constitution have inspired our students to reach new heights.
I also want to thank the parents and supporters of our Constitution team, many of whom were able to come with us to Washington DC to cheer on our students. Let us all celebrate the success of our Constitution team and the bright future that lies ahead for these outstanding young individuals.
Congratulations once again to our National Champions!
Sincerely,
James McGee, Principal

SCHOLARSHIP RESOURCES
We know that many students are searching for scholarships to help offset the cost of post-high school education and we want to remind you that the College & Career Center can help. We have a dedicated scholarship resources page on the College & Career Center website. Below we have identified numerous scholarships that seniors should consider applying for.
Grant-specific scholarships due by May 1st:
2024 Grant High School Debbie Sleightam Scholarship application is due on May 1st and is only accessible using Grant student email addresses. The recipient must plan to continue their post-high school education at a community college and be a current member of the Grant choir program. The scholarship must be used for the 2024-2025 academic year. The scholarship is for a minimum of $500 and could go up to $1000.
The Grant High School Alumni Association, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, is offering a $5000 scholarship to a senior who exemplifies the spirit of Grant and will continue their post-high school education at an Oregon four-year college or university, community college, or career training program. Priority will be given to students with the most need. This scholarship recipient is decided on by a committee of alumni in the community. The scholarship must be used for the 2024-2025 academic year. This scholarship application is due by 3:30 on Wednesday, May 1st, and is only accessible for Grant student email addresses.
The 2024 Grant High School Jerry Exley Scholarship is funded by the family and friends of Grant High School alum, Jerry Exley. They would like to award a $2000 scholarship to two Grant seniors who will continue their post-high school education at an Oregon four-year college or university, community college, or career training program. Priority will be given to students who have a strong athletic ability, community involvement, student leadership, grade point average, and financial need. The scholarship must be used for the 2024-2025 academic year. Like all of our Grant-specific scholarships, only students with a Grant PPS email address can apply or access this application. Applications are due by 3:30 on Wednesday, May 1st.
Our neighbor, Don Luey, is funding the Hollywood Senior Center Scholarship again this year. Don is a regular participant at the Community for Positive Aging, which is focused on offering a diverse range of services with the singular focus of empowering older adults to live their lives with independence, and a sense of fulfillment. As it approaches 50 years of service to the Northeast Portland community, Don is appreciative of the many volunteer hours Grant High School students have provided. Don would like to award a $1000 scholarship for up to 4 Grant High School seniors who are high academic achievers looking to further their education in the physical or social sciences, health fields, or technology. Priority will be given to students who come from lower-income families and have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship must be used for the 2024-2025 academic year and is NOT limited to Oregon schools. This scholarship is due by 3:30 on Wednesday, May 1st. Like all our scholarships, students must use their Grant PPS email address to apply.
The John and Eline Goss Scholarship is for 2 Grant students who plan to attend Oregon State University in the Fall of 2024. The Grant High School Scholarship Committee will select the two potential recipients. Eligible students will have demonstrated good citizenship in school and community and must have been involved in high school and/or community activities. The scholarship is for $3000. HEALTHY CHOICES BULLETIN
A monthly newsletter of substance abuse resources for families, students and staff.
The purpose of this communication is to alert families about a troubling pattern of online cyber abuse, which targets youth aged 14-18, particularly males, referred to as Sextortion. Sextortion occurs when someone is coerced into sending explicit images and once those images are received, they are used to threaten and extort (usually for money). In most cases, the teen believes they are exchanging the images with a teen of a similar age - this is part of the scam. Recently, federal law enforcement warned schools to be on the lookout for warning signs so that we may have the opportunity to intervene in potentially dangerous situations before things go too far. Last week, Hulu released a powerful documentary called IMPACT X Nightline: Sextortion that serves as an urgent warning and call to action for parents. While we recommend the film, we do so with caution as teen suicide is discussed throughout - please take care when watching. Included here are links to information, tips, and resources we’ve gathered about protecting teens from harm by online predators. We hope it will encourage conversation at home and between teens within their peer groups. As always, we welcome your feedback. Report concerns to Safe Oregon using any of the following methods.
SCHOOL NURSE NEWS
It is pollen season
A variety of things can make asthma or allergy symptoms worse. These are called "triggers." Pollen is a common trigger for many kids. Medications used at school must be provided by a parent or guardian: we do not stock medication for student use. Please remind your student to take an antihistamine at home and use their daily asthma medication. Also, have your student carry their rescue inhaler if they have seasonal allergies and asthma. Consent forms are available for students that need to have medication during the school day. Find out more information at kidshealth.org and allergyasthmanetwork.org
