March Character Trait: Courage
Courage is the ability and strength to face something that may be difficult or challenging. Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather perseverance in the presence of fear and the willingness to stand up for what is right or to try something new even though it may be uncomfortable or uncertain.
Be sure you are using the digital Leadworthy Character lessons to teach each character trait.
Why focus on Courage?
- Courage encourages engagement. Courage helps students raise their hand, participate, try new things, and voice their opinions.
- Courage builds self-confidence. Courage is the choice to act. By doing something, students increase their belief in themselves and their ability to do difficult or challenging things.
- Courage can help reframe a negative. When something does not go as planned or a student gets upset about a mistake or failure, courage can help reframe the event in a positive light.
Courage in Action
- Provide leadership opportunities. Students can learn and demonstrate leadership by teaching and mentoring others, classroom roles and responsibilities, or community outreach.
- Encourage discussion and debate. Foster curiosity and empower students to formulate ideas and engage in respectful discourse and conversations.
- Celebrate failures. Create opportunities to reduce fear of failure and celebrate when students try something new, even if they are not successful the first time.
March: Courage
**Select your March Character Kid and complete the link below NO LATER than Monday, March 18th. This is a firm deadline so we can notify parents in a timely manner and shirts can be made by in time.
Character Breakfast Award Winner (Be sure to click on the "March" tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet) is the link that you will use for turning in your Character Breakfast student each month. Please do not complete the form in advance. Give your students a couple of weeks to learn and display the character trait in your classroom before choosing them for the month. Each month has a deadline listed on the form, to ensure t-shirts are ordered in time. Please keep in mind that the student you choose for the character breakfast is the same character winner that Ms. Riley takes a picture of each month.
Staff Character Award Nomination Link: Click the link below to nominate one staff member who models our March Character Trait, Courage.
Message from our Media Specialist, Mrs. Pettis
2nd grade: I will work on some ACAP review items with your students during the month of March. Please sign up for a total of 3, 30 min times. One for the week of March 4th, March 11th, and March 18th.
1st grade: I will see ½ of your classes the week of March 11th and the other half the week of March 18th for robot lessons. Please sign up for 1 of those weeks. Then, during ACAP testing, I have Friday March 29th, and Friday April 5th available- please sign up for one of those Fridays as well.

CAFETERIA REMINDERS
- Lunch #'s SHALL be put in the spreadsheet EVERY MORNING by 8:25. After this reminder, those who are not doing so will meet with me individually. This is just as important as posting attendance on time. We MUST report accurate numbers.
- Do NOT report to the cafeteria earlier than your assigned lunch time. When you're early and/or late, it disrupts the flow of the schedule tremendously.
- You must be ON TIME and leave ON TIME. (SET A TIMER).
- Please be courteous of other classes coming in after you. Do not allow students to leave trash on or under the table. Hold them accountable. Check your table BEFORE you exit the cafeteria
- CLEAN UP any trash that is left at the "adult water area."
- MONITOR your students at ALL times (while in line to get lunch, while eating lunch, while discarding trash at the end of your lunch time). Please walk with your class to drop trash at the window.
- I am considering adding more duty-free lunch opportunities for next year; however, I will not be able to do this if our cafeteria routines/procedures are not being followed by our staff.
Math PD - April 4th and 5th
I am excited to share that we were awarded a grant to use by the end of the school year on math professional development. It was board approved at yesterday's board meeting for us to retain the services of Ann Elise Record Consulting. YAY!!! 🙂
This 2-day in person professional development on best practices in elementary Math instruction will focus on number sense, problem solving, and the early learning trajectories. The schedule is linked below with the sub that has been secured. Each teacher will also receive an online padlet of resources as well as a copy of Dr. Nicki Newton's book, Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen with Addition and Subtraction ( Ann Elise is a contributing author, together with Dr. Alison Mello).
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gdQUlM5JUwcjStVQwbFqB1UYFTCle5QBHA1lUdTqWf0/edit?usp=sharing
Be sure to mark your calendar! I do not see any scheduled absences in frontline for these days; therefore, any planned absences on 4/4 or 4/5 must be pre-approved by me.
We are looking forward to these two-days of learning as we work together to create engaged, curious, risk-taking, flexible, and confident lifelong mathematicians!
Daily Math Fluency Kits
It is the expectation that the Daily Math Fluency Kit is used DAILY. This resource is NOT optional. If you need support with implementation and would like Mrs. Townsend to come to your classroom to do a model lesson, side-by-side coaching, etc. please sign up for a time using the link below.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EVaTpCrJ5hokPCgst9KmuSBLjvB1LEPaWaAJvUgLsqI/edit?usp=sharing
The PPT that was shared during the DMF training and the dot/picture cards that go with your kits in case you would like to access them digitally are attached in an email that was sent to you from Mrs. Townsend on 2/6.
Don’t forget to use your number talk hand signals and have them posted in your room. While conducting observations, I've noticed several classrooms where these are being implemented. This is a much better way for students to respond/check for understanding rather than "hand raising."
Mrs. Townsend gave everyone a hand signals poster at the start of the year. If you need another one, let her know. If you would like the poster size like she has in her room, please send her an email and she will get one for you.
Here are some links to extra video resources:

Addition and Subtraction Strategies!!
As we have learned, the addition and subtraction algorithm is not a standard in the state of Alabama until fourth grade. Delaying teaching of the standard algorithm until fourth grade allows students to rely on place value strategies and models that provide students with the conceptual understanding of adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.
Rote learning of traditional algorithms can actually interfere with students development of number sense.
THANK YOU to Mrs. Townsend for creating the addition and subtraction graphics that provide information on some of the addition and subtraction strategies students may use. These strategies allow students to approach problems in a way that makes sense for them and that they can explain to others. These allow students to have a better understanding of base ten number concepts and encourage flexibility in the use of a variety of strategies. As a result, this creates confident and capable mathematicians!
**I should NOT see any teachers teaching students to solve problems using the addition and subtraction standard algorithm. Mrs. Johnson and I will be observing your instruction, looking at student work, and also pulling a sample of student assessments to see the various strategies students are using to solve these problems. I realize this requires a shift in mindset; however, when we know better, we do better. Please let Mrs. Townsend or admin know if you need support. We are all in this together.
ATOT Observations
Announced ATOT observations will begin this week. Click the link below to sign up for a date/time. An observation will be completed on all certified employees. Tier 1 instruction (reading or math) will be observed for all gen. ed classroom teachers.

4 Questions for Misbehavior & Disrespect
Weekly Class Newsletter & Homework Expectations:
- Weekly Newsletters are expected to be uploaded to your grade level google folder no later than 8:00am Monday morning.
- Parents should be informed of all weekly assessments (specific date) as well as the skills being taught that week. In the event you do not give the assessment on the date indicated on the newsletter, be sure you communicate the change with the parents in a timely manner.
- When introducing a new skill, provide parents with a brief explanation. For example: "This week we are learning the digraph "sh." A digraph is a combination of two letters representing one sound." fish, shark, shop, etc. "Have your child go on a scavenger hunt around their home and locate objects that have the /sh/ sound in them. Write the words on an index card, etc.
- Provide parents with Open Court at-home Connection letter
- Provide parents with a copy of Open Court, Phonics First routines (as needed)
- Provide parents with examples of how they can help their child at home. Several parent resources are linked in the monthly Hutchens Highlights as well as our school website.
- Homework should only be given to reinforce skills previously taught.
- Homework should last no longer than 15-20 minutes.
- Homework is NOT a grade.
Assessments
- ALL students MUST be provided with a paper copy of the assessment.
- Students must complete the assessment paper/pencil FIRST.
- Students may transfer their answers to a schoology assessmnet AFTER completeing the paper/pencil assessment.
- Again, the paper test must be taken first, NOT simultaneously.
- Students need the opportunity to annotate, highlight, underline, draw models, etc. on a paper test.
- Grade levels are expected to meet at least once a week to preview assessments as a TEAM. Discuss the question types, any unknown vocabulary, tricky answer choices, answer key discrepancies, etc. Discuss the instructional choices you can make in your classroom to provide students with background knowledge.
- Reading and math tests must be graded the exact same across the grade level.
Cafeteria Reminders:
Red, green, & yellow cones are expected to be used at your lunch table. First 10 minutes, display the RED cup. Remainder of lunch period, display the GREEN cone. Display the YELLOW cone, if needed, as a warning for students to lower their voices before moving back to RED.
A "YACKER TRACKER" was also purchased and has been placed in the cafeteria.
It is the expectation this procedure is followed and modeled by teachers & staff EACH day.
Sick Buckets
SOCK IT TO MATH
Remember, not all of your students should be getting 100s. This is a MASTERY incentive, meaning only the students who truly are automatic with these facts should be successfully getting five 100s. They won’t start out getting 100s right away and some students won’t get 100s. That’s okay. The goal is for students to improve. Set a goal for them.
Mrs. Owen would like the Sock it to Math pages to be graded with a positive score. This is a great idea! It keeps our students (and us) positive about what our students are achieving. Instead of marking -12, put +8. The student got 8 correct. Then the next day maybe they got +10. They are getting more and more. Encourage them in that.
Trust the process!! Keep the expectations high. It will take some time, but they will grow and meet it.
As always, let me know if you have any questions and concerns.
Capturing Kids' Hearts - Hutchens Social Contract
Sound Walls
Recap:
- A Sound Wall is a snap shot of what students have been taught!
- When we use the Sound Wall as a tool to support phonics instruction, we uncover graphemes as the patterns are explicitly taught.
- Consequently, when anyone walks into your classroom they see at a glance what the students have been taught.
- We learned from word walls that always organizing words by first letter is potentially confusing and misleading. So where is the best place to post irregular HFWs?
- In short the best place for a word is where your students will look for it! So remember to view the Sound Wall from the perspective of your students and think about speech to print.
- If your students are looking for the word said, where will they look? Many young readers would look under the /s/ sound. How about the word one? They will probably look at the /w/ sound.
- When in doubt, talk to your students, analyze the word and decide together where to post it.
- With that being said.. Adding words to a sound wall comes down to teacher choice and meeting the needs of your students. Many teachers choose not to post any words and many others like to add some.
- So let’s consider a couple of things. The shift from a word wall to a sound wall is to support students in perceiving the sounds in words and mapping them to known graphemes (speech to print). This process builds the circuitry in the brain needed for reading both regular and irregular words.
- If we add words to the Sound Wall, what will our students do when writing? Copy them! The act of copying will not facilitate the same mental process of analyzing sound/letter relationships.
- If you want to add a word after it has been explicitly taught, perhaps put the word up for a week or so and then take it down. It is when you take it down that you will see if the word has gone through the mental process of Orthographic Mapping and is stored in long term memory. If your students are misreading or misspelling the word after you take it down, it’s ok! They are telling you they need to go through the process of mapping phonemes to graphemes again.
- Adding words and then taking them down is shift in thinking and procedure for sure!
Have you tried it? If so how did it go?
If you need assistance with implementation, please see our LRS, Mrs. Jones.
Be sure to read & understand MCPSS Standard 8 regarding student confidentiality!
Classroom Split Lists
- Split lists should be completed & uploaded in grade level Google folder!
- Be sure the mode of transportation (for dismissal) is listed for EACH student in your classroom.
Breakfast & Lunch Procedures
