Elk Island National Park
Over a hundred years of Bison Conservation
About Elk Island
Elk Island was created in 1913 to protect some of the last Wood Bison on the Planet. In the 1940s it was thought that the species had become extinct but in 1956 a herd was found inside the park. Today descendents of those Bison still live in the park along with over thousand head of Elk, 300 head of Moose, and over a thousand Beaver.
