Spartan Spotlight: Senior Soccer Player Drew Doerwald
Senior Shepaug soccer player Drew Doerwald has led the Spartans through the first half of the 2019 season. Drew has scored seven goals in Shepaug’s first eight games, including a “hat-trick” (three goals in one game) against perennial Berkshire League powerhouse Northwestern Regional.
Drew, who is a four-year soccer player at Shepaug, plans to attend college and major in Economics next year after graduation from Shepaug.
In addition to playing soccer for Shepaug, Drew led the Spartan boys' tennis team last spring, playing the #1 singles position all season.
Elementary Students Learn About Fire Safety
It is a national effort led by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) to lower the number of home fires and home injuries in America. Along with USFA, each fire community is speaking out with a unified message of fire prevention and safety to the public. A great way to assist in accomplishing this goal is to teach our youngsters how to stay safe and prevent fires from happening in their homes. With knowledge, our students will become local ambassadors of fire prevention. Fire Prevention Week is celebrated during the month of October. The elementary students of Region 12 all participated in community-based Fire Prevention Programs.
Each local fire department provided our students with a program about fire safety. They introduced students to the firefighters, the equipment firefighters use to help people, the equipment used to put out fires as well as fire prevention and survival skills. It is always a grand event when the big red fire truck arrives at each school! In our schools, we continue our efforts to educate our students throughout the year with monthly fire drill practices. It is hoped that the students will go home with the important messages learned about fire safety and to practice those safety strategies at home with their families.
Roxbury Tractor Parade
Shepaug's agriscience students along with the assistance of students in the "Nature by Design" course and members of the local community, joined together using local agriculture goods to create a country fall wedding float for the Tractor Parade in Roxbury this year. FFA members and agriscience staff participated in the fun-filled community event held on October 6th.
The student-designed and built float was awarded a ribbon for best community spirit. We want to thank the families and students that came together to assist with this event.
Fifth Grade Track Meet
Booth Free, Burnham and Washington Primary Schools
On the glorious Tuesday of October 15th, fifth graders from Booth Free, Burnham, and Washington Primary Schools met at the Shepaug Valley School track for their first opportunity to mingle with their future classmates. Mr. Morgan, our physical education teacher, organized a friendly competition among blended teams.
Students had an opportunity to apply skills learned during physical education. They participated in a variety of events such as the long jump, shot-put, and relays. Parents, teachers, and peers were present to cheer on the athletes at each event. We hope friendships were formed that will carry on into middle school and beyond.
Senior Project Update
Isabel collected donations that will be used to purchase acreage in the Amazon, preserving it from development. Isabel will extend her research into climate-based policy through her work in the Model UN and the World Affairs Forum later in the year.

Community Eye Screening For Children
Fall vision screening helps identify vision problems early before they interfere with a child’s school performance. A child’s vision can also change at any point as they grow so annual screening is an essential tool. This year we were happy to have the Washington Lions Club come to Booth Free, Burnham, and Washington Primary Schools to screen our Pre-K to fifth-grade students with their PediaVision equipment.
This equipment has been evaluated by the American Association of Pediatrics and is more sophisticated than the old Snellen Charts. The equipment operates like a camera and is very easy for the participating students. It takes only a couple minutes to screen a child for a whole list of eye abnormalities.
⚽️ Spartan Night 🏐
On October 10th, 30 students played indoor soccer at the second Spartan Night this year. It was a great time, and we are looking forward to our next Spartan Night!
All high school students at Shepaug are welcome to participate in the Spartan Night activities.
REACH Program
On Thursday, October 10, John Marshall, Master Percussionist, visited the REACH classes at Washington Primary School for ASAP’s drumming workshops. Each class had opportunities to explore several percussion and hand drumming instruments. John shared the history of the instruments and demonstrated a variety of ways to play them. Looking at all the smiles, it is easy to say that the students truly enjoyed this presentation. Their challenge was to create the sounds of a storm. Students used wind tubes, thunder drums, a rain drum along with other drums to replicate the roaring thunder and rain of a storm.
