Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Parents,
Hope that everyone had great family time during Winter Break. The gift of the week after New Year’s Day was wonderful time for staff to recharge. As we head to the last weeks of the semester, many students are working to get caught up on overdue work to end on a positive note for the 1st semester. We appreciate the family support that you are giving your student at home.
Shortly, we will begin scheduling for our February Parent Conferences. It is an opportunity for students to reflect on the first semester and set goals for the second semester. Please look for announcements letting you know when the window opens to schedule appointments with your child’s team of teachers.
We are working on Parent Information Nights regarding vaping and juuls. All the secondary schools are seeing an increase of usage with students. School staff is in the learning phase as we know parents are too. We want to provide parents information to assist you in keeping your children safe and healthy.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that there are no school closures due to inclement weather. Please sign up for notifications or check the BSD website if you are wanting current information on school closures.
As you might be aware, the district is looking at budget reductions for the 2019-20 school year. Five Oaks is partnering with Beaver Acres and Elmonica to host a budget activity to familiarize our communities with the potential reductions that are necessary. Please join us on January 29th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at Beaver Acres.
Thank you for all support that you give our school. We appreciate you.

PUNCTUALITY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS
Dear Parents & Guardians -
In an effort to teach students the responsibility and life skills necessary to succeed in school and beyond, Five Oaks has decided to reward students who consistently arrive to class on time with a "No Tardy Party". Students must have 5 or fewer tardies between January 8th – January 29th to attend the party. Students who do not make it to the tardy party will participate in a lesson around the importance of timeliness and will be given time to make up work they are missing due to lost class time.
Please support us in encouraging your student to manage their time appropriately and arrive to class on time. If your student does not earn the reward, we would appreciate it if you would remind your student why they will be participating in the time management lesson rather than the party. All students will get a fresh start after each tardy party, so there will be many opportunities to earn the reward!
Thank you for your support. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns!

LA PUNTUALIDAD ES LA CLAVE DEL ÉXITO
Estimados padres y tutores:

Meet our new Attendance Secretary
Greetings! My Name is Mrs. Aran Redding and I'm the new attendance secretary for Five Oaks. I'm so excited to have joined an amazing community of staff and families. A little about me, I have three children all of whom attended/attend schools in Beaverton SD. They keep my husband and I busy with soccer, dance, volleyball and Girl Scouting. Our family loves to take road trips and spend time in Bend, OR and at the beach. I worked at Sunset HS for 7 years as a Paraeducator II in the Transitions/Work Experience class.
I wanted to share a couple of helpful tips when calling your student out from school:
- Please spell your students first and last name
- Please provide your students ID number (this is the same as their lunch number)
- Grade of your student
Having the above three items will ensure that your student is marked accurately for the day.
Additionally, if you are going to pull your student out early for an appointment, send a note in with them and this will allow them to be in the office at the requested time waiting for you to sign them out. This also reduces interruptions during class time.
Happy New Year!
Aran Redding
Secretary-Attendance
Five Oaks Middle School
¡Saludos!

TALK TALK TALK and WALK
One thing you won’t hear often in the Five Oaks Library is, “Shhhhhhhh.” We are working towards making the library a safe space to socialize. Sure, there are readers, but we also have game players, small group conversations, and kids catching up on homework.
While kids don’t need to be silent, you may hear: “Walk!” “Keep your food out,” or “Show respect.” While we’re social, we’re also safe (and clean). Hopefully your student can find the library a positive place to belong.

A NOTE FROM NURSE KIM
EXCLUSION DAY
Parents and Guardians:
Exclusion day is fast approaching for immunizations. Our secretaries began notifying you of needed immunizations starting in October. Please get the immunizations done at your provider's office and return the completed paperwork to school before winter break. We must send a list of students with incomplete immunization records to Washington County in the beginning of January and we need time to ensure that immunization records are entered into our computer system beforehand. Washington County Health Department will then send you an exclusion notice. Your child will be excluded as of February 20th 2019 if immunizations are not up to date or complete. Absences for exclusion are considered unexcused. It can be very difficult to get an appointment with a provider for several weeks before exclusion so please get this done now! It is also the perfect time to get a flu shot for your child if you have not already done so. Nurse KimUNA NOTA DE LA ENFERMERA KIM
DIA DE EXCLUSION
Padres y tutores:
Enfermera kim
