Acid and Base Scavenger Hunt

Supplies Needed:
- plastic cups (12)
- popsicle sticks (12)
- tablespoon
- pH strips (12)
- distilled water
- muriatic acid
- vinegar
- milk
- lime juice
- pine sol
- windex
- egg whites
- oxi clean
- listerine
- carpet cleaner
- laundry ammonia
Procedures
- Place 1 table spoon of each substance into separate cups.
- Place 2 table spoons of water into each cup.
- Stir the cup with popsicle for 1 minute.
- Dip the pH strip in the solution for 30 seconds (1/2 of the pH strip covered in solution)
- Pull the pH strip out and compare the new color of the strip with the pH color scale, then write down the pH level in your notebook.
- Take a photograph of you holding the pH strip next to the pH scale and original substance container.
- Repeat steps 3-6 with each substance.
Definition of Acidic Solutions
Any substance with a pH level below 7.
Definition of Neutral Solution
Any substance with a pH level of 7.
Definition of Basic Solution
Any substance with a pH level above 7.

All acids are substances that are levels 1-6 on the pH scale.
All neutral substances are level 7 on the pH scale.
All bases are substances that are levels 8-12 on the pH scale.
