PRINCIPAL'S UPDATE
The Maury Commodore Report
September 3, 2022
Greetings Maury Family,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year! We are so pleased to have you as Maury Commodores and we are looking forward to an amazing school year!
On the first day of school, September 6, 2022, students will report to a distribution center where they will receive their complete schedule. Schedule distribution locations will be posted on the walls in the foyer and at student entrances. Schedule distribution locations can also be found here, below, and on the MHS webpage under "Quick Links". Students will go to their assigned distribution location to be checked in and given a copy of their schedule. Once we have confirmed that all students have received their schedule, an announcement will be made to dismiss them to go to their bell 1 class. September 6 will be an 'ODD" day, and after students pick up their schedules they will attend classes for bells 1, 3, 5, and 7. Chromebook distribution will start on Thursday, 9/8 through Tuesday, 9/13.
Our outstanding faculty and staff are excited to work alongside you and your student as we strive to provide your student with challenging and rewarding learning experiences. As we make headway, it is important not to lose sight of what makes Maury such a wonderful school. We must strive to keep the Maury traditions alive and preserve the safe, warm and welcoming culture that supports student learning. I appreciate your willingness to collaborate with us in making this the best year it can be!
Again, welcome to Maury High School, a nationally recognized and fully accredited school where student success is the core of our work. As always, if I can provide any additional support or answer any other questions, please do not hesitate to call the main office for assistance at (757) 628-3344.
We look forward to seeing students Tuesday, September 6!
Warmest regards,
Ms. Karen Berg
Maury Principal

STUDENT SCHEDULES
On the first day of school, students will locate their schedule distribution location posted on the walls in the foyer and at student entrances. Students will go to their assigned distribution location to be checked in and given a copy of their schedule. Once we have confirmed that all students have received their schedule, an announcement will be made to dismiss them to go to their bell 1 class.
Students should not use any schedules previously given to them or found on Synergy to go to class the first day. ALL STUDENTS must go to their assigned distribution center.
Students who do not have a schedule will be sent to the auditorium to work with a school counselor. School counselors will communicate any concerns to parents.
There will be a process to request a schedule change once school starts. We do not make schedule changes based on teacher selection. In addition, many of our electives fill up quickly so there may be limited options for changing electives. Please see below under "School Counselors" for more information.
CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION
- Chromebook distribution will start on Thursday, 9/8 through Tuesday, 9/13.
- Once students receive them, students will be required to bring their fully charged Chromebook to school every day.

MAURY HOMECOMING 2022
LEAVING CAMPUS
Students who leave school early must exit the building at the conclusion of their last class of the day. Students may not loiter around the building or stand around in the main foyer. They must go directly to either their vehicle, parent pick-up, ride share pick-up, HRT bus stop, or walk (for those who normally walk to/from school). Exceptions will be made for inclement weather, in which students will be allowed to remain in the foyer (by the stairs).
RESPONSIBLE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Schools across the nation have experienced a variety of issues related to social media. While social media does have positive qualities such as connecting with family and friends, establishing networks, etc. it can also be used for nefarious purposes.
For example, Tik Tok (a video-focused social network) related challenges inciting violence towards schools that have included vandalizing school bathrooms, slapping teachers, etc. There are also Instagram pages run by students that encourage posting pictures that were taken during school hours. While some may consider these types of posts amusing, we do not.
Being a digital citizen, someone who has an identity on the Internet, comes with many rights and responsibilities which are intended to protect you as well as everyone else with whom you interact.
These Tik Tok challenges and IG pages are examples of the inappropriate use of social media. Unfortunately, when social media is misused and a connection to the school is established, there are consequences. Some postings may be considered harassing and menacing and could result in school detention and/or suspension. We prefer to avoid these situations, but we need your help. Parents and guardians, please join us in speaking with your children about the ramifications of their decisions. In addition, we implore you to closely monitor your child’s use of social media. Let’s work together to ensure that our students are in a safe and secure learning environment.

2. Avoid appointments and extended trips during school hours.
3. Keep track of your child’s attendance using ParentVue.

12TH GRADERS MUST HAVE THEIR SECOND MENINGOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE
12th Graders Must Have Their Second Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine to Stay Enrolled In School.
Meningococcal ACWY vaccine can help protect against meningococcal disease.
Virginia Law mandates that each rising senior has two properly spaced doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). The first dose shall be administered prior to entry to the 7th grade. The second dose shall be administered prior to entry to the 12th grade. Please provide proof of vaccination to Mrs. Elforsi, School Nurse.
The 2020 General Assembly passed House Bill 1090 which amends the minimum vaccination requirements for attendance at a public or private elementary, middle or secondary school, child care centers, nursery schools, family home day care, or developmental center
This legislation became effective July 1, 2021, and amends the Code of Virginia § 32.1-46.A.4 to require:
Two properly spaced doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). The first dose shall be administered prior to entry to the seventh grade. The second dose shall be administered prior to entry to the twelfth grade.
All 12th graders must have this vaccine within the first 90 days of school. This vaccine is available by your healthcare provider. Reminders will be sent to those who are not documented as having the vaccine in the Virginia Department of Health records and will be asked to provide verification.
