Riley Week
What a fun week we had - and we raised money for Riley's, too! As a school, we raised $2479.23 - including $94.75 from our own classroom.
Thank you to all who participated and contributed to help Riley Hospital better serve the children in our state.
Shoutout to Riley
Sensory Stations
We've been learning about our brains and regulating our emotions during our Mindfulness lessons this year. It's fascinating, and we'd like to delve further into this by creating SENSORY STATIONS for each classroom. Here is a link if you can help us acquire some materials needed for this project. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3W0P2S4ZZFIHX?ref_=wl_share

Curriculum Corner
Reading:
- This week is Week 1 of Unit 4. We are focusing on using context clues to find meanings of words. We will also look at and discuss point of view.
- We are also spending time citing text evidence and creating strong responses to open ended questions.
- Small-Group Reading...ask your child if they have small group reading homework this week.
Spelling:
- Our spelling pattern this week is oo, ew, ue. Words will come home tomorrow. Please spend some time helping your child study. Students may also practice by using Spelling City. The link can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. Our word lists can be found under Amber Fleck. Test will be on FRIDAY this week!
Grammar/Writing
- We are looking at, finding, and using linking verbs this week. The students have already memorized the linking verbs: AM, IS, ARE, WAS, WERE, but we will spend some time using them correctly.
In writing, we are exploring informative writing. We will learn how to choose a topic and the steps to follow in writing about this topic.
The POW, Snowman Comes to Life, is due on Friday. Students are writing a narrative piece on how their snowman comes to life, what they do together, and what happens when 24 hours are up and the snowman is no longer alive. Parents, please try letting your child do the revision this time. You are welcome to guide them (especially if the organization is hindering the understanding of the writing), but please let them try to figure out 5 ways to make their story more interesting. The students have been working on this at school and they are doing a fantastic job of revising! Please continue to help them edit and correct spelling, capitals, and punctuation.
- We are continuing our study of multiplication. Watch for flashcards in your child's binder. Please study these with your child for 10-15 minutes every night. Thanks for your support at home!! Mastering multiplication in third grade is a necessity for students to thrive in the upper grades.
- We are focusing on one and two step word problems. We will be looking for key words to help us identify the steps needed to solve a problem.
Social Studies:
- We are studying Citizenship this week. We will be discussing and learning about the rights and duties we have as citizens of the US. We will also take a look at how we can be good citizens. Study guides came home on Friday, and our test is Wednesday, January 22.
- Please use the link in the email I sent on Sunday, the link in Canvas, or the link later in this newsletter to have your child play the Quizlet to review for the test.
- IF YOUR CHILD ATTENDS THE ELA LEARNING LAB, THEY WILL NOT BE TAKING THIS TEST.

Kindness Challenge
This year, students at Ireland Elementary will be completing the Kindness Challenge again. We did this challenge a few years ago, and I am positive we can all complete the challenges this year! This week's challenge is...
HOLD THE DOOR OPEN FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
At the end of each week, students who have completed the Kindness Challenge for that week will get to put a sticker up for that act. Kindness is free...sprinkle that stuff everywhere!
