Kitchen Safety
By Sam and Austin
How to Prepare Food in a Safe Manner
To start you should pull up your sleeves, pull your hair back, and wash your hands. Set out all of your utensils and ingredients. If you are using knives, make sure that they are sharp and not dull. This will prevent the knife from cutting you. Also if you are using a cutting board, make sure you do not use the same one for both meat and vegetables. This will prevent cross contamination. When thawing food, thaw it in the microwave or in the refrigerator instead of setting it out all day on the counter. This will help your food from getting contaminated.
How to Cook Food Safely
- When you are cooking with a microwave, always remember to never put metal in it. Also remember to use an oven mitt in case the item being cooked becomes very hot.
- When cooking on a stove top, remember to put all pot handles to the side and not hanging over the edge. When you are lifting pot lids, angle it away from you so the steam doesn't come into your face and burn you.
- When cooking in the oven always remember to remove things by using oven mitts so you do not burn your hands. Make sure you do not use a towel and make sure that the oven mitts are not wet.
Prevention of Diseases
How to Prevent these Diseases

- Place foods in air tight containers
- Always use clean utensils
What to do in Dangerous Situations
Possible Dangerous Situations
- Glass Breaking
- Grease Fires
- Spilling Something
- A Cut
- Sleeve on Fire
What To Do If These Incidents Happen
- If you break some glass, do not pick it up with your hands. Use a broom and dustpan then go over the area with a wet paper towel to get the small glass pieces.
- If there is a grease fire, do not pour water on it. Place the lid back on the pot or pan and turn off the heat source. You could also use baking soda or a fire extinguisher. If these do not work call 911.
- If you spill something, clean it up right away to prevent further accidents.
- If you cut yourself, apply pressure to the area to allow the blood to clot. Then place a bandage with antibacterial ointment on the area if it is a minor cut or go to the doctor to get stitches if it is a deep wound.
- If your sleeve catches on fire, stop, drop, and roll.
How To Keep Food Safe
To keep food safe keep it out of temperatures from 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This is called the danger zone. This just means keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Also do not leave food out longer than two hours. In addition make sure that you keep all cleaning products in a cabinet away from food. Wash all of your fruits and vegetables and make sure that meat is thoroughly cooked. Always use clean utensils and do not use the same utensils on both raw meats and vegetables to prevent cross contamination. Just remember, when in doubt, throw it out.
