1A Classroom Update 10
March 11, 2016
Spring is Near!
Spring is right around the corner and our friends couldn't be happier! We started off this term with brand new units and our 1A friends have accepted all challenges with open arms! Please read through our update so you can meet new "friends" and see what our amazing scholars have been up to!
Academics
Reading
In these past couple of weeks our nonfiction readers have been introduced to a new friend named King How. King How comes from the land of questions and is very curious about nonfiction, its text features, and how they help our friends as readers. We have been incorporating puppets into our lessons, so our 1A friends can feel as if they are teaching what they know to a new friend and it is also super fun! In the last two weeks, we have been honing in on text features and how they help the reader. This way our friends can identify the feature and tell King How, “How it helped them read the text.” Our friends have also been creating their own headings and captions.
Writing
Our authors have been hard at work these past two weeks. We have gathered all the Information needed for them to start their All About Books! We have also had a friend join us to help us figure out how to write an All About Book! That puppets name is Antonio! He is there to ask our authors all about their topics and how to engage a reader with their writing! Being that we are also reading nonfiction books during Readers Workshop, our friends have intertwined what they have learned and now incorporated it into their own writing! Our authors have thought about headings and fun facts to match their topics! We can't wait for you to see the finished product! At home continue to research and talk about their given topic. This way they can make their writing even richer!
Math
Our 1A scholars have been so busy in their math since getting back from winter break! We have continued our investigation into place value, further delving into how many tens and ones make up a two-digit number. Our 1A mathematicians have also begun their study of money, linking tens and ones to dimes and pennies. They have learned the difference between the two coins in both appearance and value. Most recently we have started to compare different numbers using the terms greater than, less than and equal to. Our 1a mathematicians have also been learning the different signs (<, >, =) used when comparing two numbers. In our measurement unit, our students have been learning about data, and the different ways they can present data. They even made their own student polls and questioned different people in the classroom about things such as their favorite, snack, subject, or animal. Our next step in math will be to start doing addition and subtraction problems using our place value diagram.
Inquiry
Our 1A scholars are continuing on their scientific journey in our current Inquiry Unit. We have maintained our study into the different properties of matter by conducting more and more child friendly science experiments. Our students really got their hands dirty in our last 2 experiments. The first was meant to investigate how a solid and a liquid can form to make a gas. It was called the Balloon Pop and our scientists got to witness vinegar and baking soda coming together to fill a balloon up with gas. The next experiment showed our students how matter changes help produce goods we use in everyday life. 1A scientists got to make their own butter by putting heavy cream and a marble into a jar and shook with all their might! They got to witness the change from liquid to solid right in front of their very own eyes. We will be next investigating the difference between chemical and physical changes in the world around us.

Department of Education Surveys
Every year, all NYC public school families and teachers, grades K through 12, are invited to provide feedback to the NYC Department of Education (DOE) about their school’s learning environment by taking the NYC School Survey. Information collected on Brooklyn Prospect becomes part of our NYC school progress report card grade.
We have backpacked those surveys home today. Please take a few minutes to complete your survey on the paper copy you receive in the mail or online atwww.nycschoolsurvey.org.
To help our report card, your survey must be completed by March 18th, 2016.
If you have any questions or need help, please contact Ms. Carmona at hscoordinator@brooklynprospect.org.
Thank you for providing important feedback about our school!

¡A comer, olé!
1A mastered Simón dice, using Spanish vocabulary words (cabeza, pelo, ojos, hombros, rodillas, pie, etc). Recently we have been working on listening, speaking and writing in Spanish. Big shout out to Ms. Walsh who prepared our fantastic trading cards. During Spanish, we wrote personal stats on the backs including: name, date of birth, eye color, hair color and height. ¡Magnífico! Upon completion we traded cards with our friends and read each others stats. ¡Muy bien 1A!
Currently, we are learning about Spanish food and restaurantes. We enjoy playing restaurant in the classroom — and pretending to eat hot food!!
