School District Five director selected as School Counselor of the Year
IRMO – Dutch Fork High School’s director of school counseling, Dr. Donna Huger, has been selected as the 2020 School Counselor of the Year in South Carolina by the Palmetto State School Counselor Association (PSSCA).
The award is given annually to a school counselor who has demonstrated their ability to provide leadership in executing a comprehensive school counseling program impacting students, the community and other stakeholders.
“I consider it an honor and a privilege to represent school counselors in the state of South Carolina,” said Huger. “I am a strong proponent of the important role school counselors serve in meeting the needs of students on a daily basis. Every day, I get the opportunity to know that what I do matters. That is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. As a Director of School Counseling, I get the opportunity to lead a team of professionals that deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that is tailored to meet the needs of the students, parents, staff and community we serve.”
Huger has been a secondary school counselor since 2000, after leaving Higher Education as a Student Adviser/Counselor at both the undergraduate and graduate school levels. She has served as the Director of School Counseling for three years at Dutch Fork High School.
"Dr. Huger is the epitome of a children's advocate,” said Dr. Gerald Gary, Dutch Fork High School principal. “I am not surprised that she has been recognized by her peers to receive this prestigious award. It is an honor to work alongside her, learning from her daily, as she creates programming and resources which ensure that the students at Dutch Fork High School are college and career ready."
Dr. Huger currently serves on the PSSCA Governing Board as the Midlands Regional Chair. She also is an Adjunct Professor in the Counselor Education Program at South Carolina State University, where she has served since 2005.
School District Five Director of Secondary Education Alvin Pressley said, "Dr. Huger is a true professional and is an example others should strive to emulate in offering the highest level of counseling services to all students at Dutch Fork High School. Because of her hard work and dedication to the profession she has been selected by her peers as a shining representation for ALL school counselors in our state!"
School District Five students win awards at FBLA Competition
IRMO –Lexington-Richland School District Five students had a great showing at the South Carolina Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) District 2 Conference and received numerous awards. School District Five has three high schools with FBLA chapters and all were represented at the competition on January 25 at North Augusta High School.
Students have been preparing in various events for the competition since October. The following students who placed will compete at the FBLA State Leadership Conference in North Charleston, March 13-14.

South Carolina Future Business Leaders of America’s District two is made up of nine counties including: Aiken, Calhoun, Edgefield, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, Richland and Saluda counties.
South Carolina Future Business Leaders of America is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) education association comprised of more than 2,000 students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields within the state of South Carolina. The mission of the group is to inspire and prepare students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences.
Math Team
Congratulations to the math team on their outstanding performance at the University of South Carolina High School Math Competition last weekend. They competed against schools from across the state.
The team placed 1st in Division 2. Team members included Olivia Conti, David Liu, Eric Park, and Janette Park.
David Liu, Eric Park, and Janette Park all earned one of the 16 highest scores on the individual written exam.
The team also placed 2nd in the Math Golf game.
Congratulations on a job well done!
Make-Up Time
To ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in SAMP/attendance makeup, DFHS will hold additional makeup days on 2/6, 2/10, and 2/13. A payment of 15 dollars per class must be paid to attendance. Students will report to room 106 (study hall) no later than 3:45 on those days. If you are unsure about whether or not your child needs to make up days, please contact attendance at (803) 476-3306.

9th Grade IGP Conferences!
Ninth grade IGP conferences will be held during the months of January-February. During this (Individual Graduation Plan) conference, we will review current grades, graduation requirements, discuss post-secondary options, and request courses for the 2020-2021 school year.
