The Groundhog Gazette
Amity Elementary - Home of the Groundhogs
May 3, 2016
From the Desk of Mr. Lowe
Dear Parents,
Believe it or not, we're headed into the last month of the school year. It's gone by so fast! I wanted to give you a quick update on what's happening on our playground. A couple weeks ago, our Groundhogs on the Ground (4th-6th grade student leaders), started organizing and overseeing games on the playground. Our goal was to create an opportunity for students to participate in a structured environment. The games proved to be VERY popular, and nearly 75% of the 1st through 3rd graders were rushing to participate.
Due to the big response, I sent out a request for parent volunteers last week, and I'm thrilled to say that we have five parents committed to help for four days a week. A great big thank you to Vanessa Kennedy, Kim Stroh, Rachel Breen, and Mike & Ashley Welch for kindly donating their time. The kids love seeing adults out on the playground! If anyone is still interested, we're looking for a volunteer to come to school on Tuesdays. The time commitment is roughly 12:15-1:45. Please call the office (854-4220) or send a message to Tim.Lowe@boiseschools.org if you'd like to join us.
Thanks for all you do to make Amity a great place to learn!

Summer Reading Tips
1. Read aloud together with your child every day.
2. Set a good example. Keep lots of reading material around the house. Turn off the TV and have each person read his or her book, including mom and dad.
3. Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it.
4. Let kids choose what they want to read.
5. Take your children to the library regularly.
6. Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World.
7. Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals.
8. Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, notices.
9. Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook.
