We are SPS: Mid- February update
Budget season, SHS blood drive + well water testing
Budget season is here
Budget season is once again upon us and conversations regarding the 2020-21 school year are beginning to take place.
Thursday night, the Springfield Budget Committee met for their February work session. The meeting included high-level overviews of the student investment account work, textbook adoption cycles and processes and an update to the technology fund, including the allocation of the final general obligation bond funds.
Oregon Battle of the Books is back!
It's OBOB season! Teams of students at varying schools are currently participating in a tournament-style "battle" of knowledge about particular books. Seen here: Mt. Vernon's Tim Ranger judging one of the teams.

Centennial Valentines event
Students in the English Language Development program at Centennial Elementary School worked to create Valentines for friends and family on Thursday.
SHS blood drive supports health occupations, saves lives
More than 95 people helped save local lives and raise money for local students Thursday by donating blood at a blood drive held at Springfield High School.
Organized by Bloodworks Northwest and SHS students who are involved in HOSA – Future Health Professionals Club, the blood drive fundraiser helps to pay for HOSA students to attend the Oregon Leadership Conference and the International Leadership Conference where students’ health occupations knowledge is tested through a written and clinical test.
The drive also benefits local patients in need of blood. For every person who donates, their blood can save up to three lives. Blood donated at the Thursday event also stays in Lane County to help local patients in need.
"It's a small thing I can do to help out," said SHS senior Juan Padilla-Lopez. "It's not much, but sometimes it's all about the small things you can do to help others."

SPS Applause!
When Antonio Ochoa Morales pulled up to Yolanda Elementary School one day last week, he thought the teachers and students had maybe gone on strike.
Staff and students were standing outside of the school – where he works as a bilingual education assistant and his daughter attends fourth grade – with a large red sign. At first, he thought something bad was happening, but then he got close enough to read the sign.
“CONGRATS MR. OCHOA!” the sign read in blue and white writing. Many staff members and students were also wearing red, white and blue.
Then, Ochoa began to cry “happy tears,” he said. Read more!
Pool hiring to begin soon
Increasing systems and processes has been a priority for the district’s human resources department in recent years. In an effort to continue that work, the HR department will now be opening candidate pools for the most frequently vacant positions. This approach will also help the district to remain competitive and start the process early in an effort to recruit highly qualified candidates.
Working with administrators and the association, human resources has streamlined the hiring process to allow for the increased recruitment incentive of open positions at upcoming job fairs and to capitalize on potentially posting positions early in the hiring cycle. Read more
