Door 16 Parent Notice
Door 16 Families,
We have offered Door 16 as an option to families who walk or would like to get out of their cars to meet their children at the end of the day. Unfortunately, I have observed several safety issues with this lately. The choices some parents are making are putting students at risk of serious harm:
Parents and their children are not crossing at the designated crosswalk, which is extremely dangerous with bus traffic.
Some children are directed by their parents to cross the bus lane to meet their parents in the parking lot. Students then are crossing without an adult.
Some parents are parking in our designated handicapped spots or double parking.
As a reminder, Horizon’s safety expectations for Door 16 pick up are:
All students and parents must cross at the marked crosswalk.
Students will not be allowed to cross the driveway without an adult escort.
Parents must park in the parking lot without double parking. Please only used handicapped spots if holding the authorization.
If unsafe choices continue, we will discontinue the release of students at Door 16 and all parent pick-up will be completed via our Car Pick-Up on the north side of the building. If families choose to walk from their homes or park on a side street and walk to the building, Door 16 would continue to be an option.
As the principal of your children, their safety is my top priority. Thank you for your assistance with this issue and willingness to keep our children safe!

SNACKS AND BIRTHDAY TREATS
**Please note that this year we have a change in practice with classroom snacks and birthday treats.**
Classroom snacks. Due to many students with food allergies/intolerances, our school has had to be extremely careful with any food items entering the school building. It is a safety issue and something that we take very seriously. In addition, our district wellness policy states that we will “engage in nutrition promotion that helps students develop lifelong healthy eating behaviors.”
We do offer breakfast and lunch at school, so snacks are optional based on your child’s need. If you do choose to send snacks with your child, please choose from this list to remain within healthy guidelines.
-fresh fruit and vegetables prepared in advance (no nuts)
-cheese
-beef sticks
-saltine crackers
-Goldfish crackers
-pretzels
-100% fruit juice boxes or water
Birthday treats: While birthdays are very important days for children, we will continue to recognize this special day in a child’s year. New this school year, we will offer each child a Horizon Birthday Button to wear for the day, in addition to recognition in his/her own classroom and/or community.
However, please refrain from sending treats or ‘treasures’ to share with your child’s class. While we are promoting healthy habits, we are also want to promote equity for all of our students on their special day. (If a child does come to school with treats to celebrate a birthday, we will have the parent pick them up in the office. This could result in disappointment for the child and inconvenience on the parent’s part.)
We realize that both notices above are changes in practice. Mrs. Cornwell is certainly able to answer any questions you may have, or listen to any concerns you wish to share.
Thank you for your part in keeping our students safe and healthy!
Volunteering at Horizon
-are going to be assigned a group of students on a field trip.
-are going to work with students out of range of a teacher. (i.e. working with students in the community area, helping with school picture day)
Basically, if you will be with students other than your own child not directly supervised by a teacher, you should complete the online form. Click here to submit your background check.
All visitors (including those with a completed background check) will be required to scan a driver's license in our Raptor System upon entering the building. This allows us to easily recognize our visitors and track those in our building.
