5 Things Writing Workshop Teachers Want Parents to Know by Libby Duggan
I recently came across a wonderful article sharing 5 things writing workshop teachers want parents to know. I loved it so much, I thought I'd share one of the things for the next 5 weeks! This was written by Libby Duggan with the Partnership for Inquiry Learning.
5. Sharing our writing is an important part of the process.
Children need many opportunities to share their writing in a public way. This makes their work important and meaningful. "Publishing" a piece of writing doesn't only mean seeing it in a formal book or magazine. Simply sharing it is valuable, too. If your child has written a story about a grandparent, for example, you can help him share it with that grandparent, perhaps by reading it aloud or even wrapping it up and presenting a copy of the story as a gift. Making your child's writing visible to others-and hearing how much the writing affects others- can help your child become more motivated to write.
Sometimes writers need help hearing themselves think, so to speak, so you might also ask, "What are you trying to say?" And then repeat back to your child in your own words what you have heard him say. You might respond with, "So if I understand correctly, it sounds like you're saying...Is that what you'd want a reader to know?"
This Week in Global Studies
2nd-4th grade--This week we began with learning more pieces to the game “Jankin” and had a few minutes to play this with a friend. Next we learned another Japanese game called “Gomoku”. It is a game that is very similar to Tic, Tack, Toe or Connect Four and is played by all ages. The students enjoyed playing this game and several even borrowed it to play during recess! It’s fun to see that kids in Japan play and have fun just like we do.
Lunch Visitors
Lunch Visitors Are Now Welcome: Visitors with approved background checks and who have also viewed the anti-bullying video may now eat lunch with their child/children. There is a ten visitor maximum, so please be sure to call the TCE office at 594-4310 by 9:30am on the day you would like to visit for lunch.
Mystery Birthday Gift
•School policy states that food may not be sent from home. A great idea is a Mystery Gift: Surprise your child by purchasing a game or book for the classroom on his/her birthday! Have your child bring this wrapped “mystery gift” to the classroom to open with us. I will then write your child’s name in the donated item, and it will be available for each student to use. This is not mandatory; it is only a choice. Your child’s birthday WILL be acknowledged in class, after all, it is a special day!
•If your child would like to hand out pencils, erasers, bookmarks, or any other non-edible item to help celebrate his/her birthday, I will be happy to accommodate a time when this can be arranged.
•It is also school policy that invitations to parties not be passed out at school unless the whole class is invited. Otherwise, they must be mailed from your home.
Book Fee/iPad Rental Update
On September 6, 2019 elementary families will be able to view book fees on Skyward. Pat Lines, TCE Treasurer will email families an invoice on Friday evening as well. Book fees and any ipad rentals payments are due October 4, 2019. For those who qualified for café/textbook/ipad free/reduced assistance, you should see a “Textbook Assistance” (TA Code) plus a fee credit (zero balance for 2019-2020 school year).
Just a reminder, for free/reduced assistance families must apply every year on or after July 1, 2019. If you have any questions about this assistance or if you would like a payment plan, please contact Pat Lines, TCE Treasurer at (317) 594-4310 or plines@hse.k12.in.us.

We Are Learning...
Reading
Our reading lessons this week did a lot of overlapping with what we have been looking at with our writing. We talked about how authors use craft moves to make their writing more enjoyable for us readers and how they bring all of these craft moves together to create a story. These published authors are our writing mentors. If we enjoy reading their stories, we will attempt to make our writing mimic the books and our writing will improve.
Writing
This week's writing was once again spent working on our personal narrative, small moment stories. Our main focus with our writing this week was to edit punctuation and spelling while also finding and sharing our favorite craft moves that we have tried in our stories. It is always fun to hear students share all the new and exciting things they are trying in their writing. Our personal narratives will be coming to a close next week with a celebration of our writing. We will visit another second grade class and share all of the hard work we have done in our writing!
