Youth Empowerment Alliance (YEA)
The LCJSMS has embarked on a three year commitment to the Youth Empowerment Alliance with the generous funding from the SEF. YEA is an organization that assists schools in addressing cultural and climate strengths and areas for opportunity. This year we are focused on LCJSMS cultural and climate from the staff and student perspective. The entire building participated in a survey in October and the survey results were analyzed by College of St. Elizabeth. We are happy to report that the overall survey yielded positive results.
With the help of YEA we have developed both student and staff committees to develop actions plans to address our growth opportunities. Committees are working to review survey results and develop actions plans to address areas of opportunity. After analyzing the results of the survey, the staff is concentrating our effort on giving students the tools necessary to shape their own future, aiding students in coping with stress and identifying ways to reduce bullying. Our student group is focusing on how involved students are in solving school problems, improving the school environment, and solving their interpersonal conflicts effectively.
"Be The Change" Assembly for 8th Grade
Thank you to the SEF for funding the “Be the Change” assembly on 2/14/19 for 8th grade students. This assembly supports the LCJSMS 8th grade Ryder's Challenge Community Service program. "Be the Change" features Dr. Norma Bowe, a professor, author and human rights activist from Kean University. “Be the Change” is a community activist organization that comprises of students from Kean as well as a volunteer from the surrounding community. The organization focuses on “Vertical Garden Peace Project” which helps create a self-sustaining compact gardening system which has reduced crime in communities with high concentrations of poverty. Additionally, the group hosts operation PB&J which feeds the homeless at Newark Penn Station on Thursday nights. Dr. Bowe will be speaking to LCJSMS students to inspire them to be the change and impact their own environment and community. There will also be future opportunities for students to participate in service projects to benefit this local organization.
